I have a Tournament Arkanoid that works fine. It is in a converted Ms. Pac Man cabinet. I picked up an Arkanoid board that has been fully tested to work. So, I figured an easy swap. Not even close. First off, the Tournament Arkanoid uses an 8-pin connector and the Arkanoid uses a 10 for power. No big deal. So, I made a new connector for the Arkanoid board. I figured I can just swap the power connectors when I swap the boards. Now, the Arkanoid board plays blind. I get no video at all. I thought I would just be able to connect the non-jamma connector to the Arkanoid board with my newly made power connector and it would be an easy swap. Why would the Tournament Arkanoid work fine and I get no video out of the Arkanoid? I have been driving myself crazy with this, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The first picture is the working Tournament Arkanoid board. The second is the regular Arkanoid board. It has the Romstar sticker next to the power pin adapter. I had to resize the images to upload, so they might not be that clear.

OK. So, correct me if I am wrong. I either buy a bootleg Arkanoid or buy a genuine Tournament Arkanoid and rewire the harness. There is no easy way to use both boards unless they are both bootlegs or both genuine.

Well, the easy way is to buy matching boards. If you buy matching Taito boards you will have to rewire your cab.

Another option is to build an adaptor that will allow the Taito board to work in your bootleg wired cab. In order to do this you will need to ID the current wiring configuration.

It's possible to make a harness that runs both legit and bootleg Arkanoids.

do you get sound on the Arkanoid board? I have both Taito and bootleg versions of both Arkanoid and Tournament. They all use the same Jamma adapter. Video and game play is fine except the bootlegs don't have sound. So, I think you should be able to get video on both boards with game play. I just haven't looked at the sound issue on the bootlegs, the pins may be diff compared to the Taito. Let me know if you want some pics to compare.

I do get sound from the Arkanoid board, just no video. The bootleg Tournament board works fine. I thought the Arkanoid boards were non-Jamma? Any pics to compare would be helpful.

follow the link for the pics. four pics: Arkanoid, bootleg Arkanoid, Tournament Arkanoid and bootleg Tournament Arkanoid. All four uses the same Jamma adapter. I get video for all, but I'm not getting sound on the two bootleg boards. I'm guessing pinout for the sound maybe different for the bootlegs or I need an amp.

The bootlegs often have power pins on the main edge connector (pins that are NC on an original board, so it's OK to route power to them for both boards). My guess is that you may have an issue with +12V (or the ground for it). The other thing you often see is the negative side of the speaker (the SPK- pin) not connected on a bootleg board (they assume it gets tied to ground in the harness). Best thing to do there is just run a jumper wire on the board.

The power connector should be 12 pins, but arkanoid doesn't use all of them. As long as you've got it lined up correctly, it should work for either the bootleg or the original.

Some bootlegs combine the power with the edge connector and use a 56-pin instead of a 44, but that doesn't appear to be your problem.
