Arkanoid Revenge of Doh - US vs World & Japan Roms

I've got the US version of Revenge of Doh. One of my favorites. But the first level on the US version is brutal for anyone new to the game and new to using a spinner. It's not an issue once you get used to it....but I see so many of my guests give up on this great game because the blocks are so low and the return is so fast...they are like whoah...WTF?

The World/Japan rom sets are different and start the game off on first level that IMO is a little more forgiving.

Does anyone know if it's possible to just rom swap to the World version? I've read a thread here that sort of conflicted that answer...it would be great to not have to go seek another PCB, especially since I've already done Matt Osbornes score save as well. :p

What difficulty are you running? I keep mine on default settings (normal), and maybe I'm just used to it, bute I think the first level is a piece of cake. You get saturated with power ups almost immediately, including the mega power up capsules (gold/flashy ones) that usually clear the level almost instantly.

I've never tried a ROM swap. I wonder how the rest of the game differs from the U.S. version!

Jimbo - I think if you understand how to play or even if you play it a few times, I agree...it's not hard. But I'm talking about kids or non-arcade guests that come over...in fact both my kids won't give it much of a chance because of that first level. And I've had it in the arcade for about a year now.

I personally believe it's two things. The biggest is 99% of the people not familiar with the game need time to warm up to the spinner. The sensitivity of the spinner is never what they expect. Everyone goes into the game with big dramatic movements and are always like - whoa! once they try it. Couple that with a first level that returns the ball right back at you fast and the fact that it throws so many power ups at you. Nobody is ever ready for it and usually they make the fatal mistake of playing the powerup not the ball.

Again, I say this from the standpoint of having guests over....not guys like us on KLOV. If I see someone play, I usually try to go over and coach them through the first level. Small movements...play the ball not the pills, etc. And honestly...not very many people stick with the game. I ran Arkanoid for awhile as I was building the cab and that had a much better reception from the kids imo, based on the way the levels ramp up.

Difficulty doesn't seem to affect anything in regards to the level design, the only way I've kinda combated this is by giving an extra life and starting with 4 instead of 3. I figure most newbs burn a guy immediately just getting used to the controls.

Do a quick video search on the other rom set Jim, it's definitely different. It would be fun to mix it up a bit.

Yeah, its pretty cool to have the info on one site, I wish he could reverse the Green/Red color coding though, the way it is now is counter-intuitive… at least in my mind.

Speaking of the particular game, I like the simplicity of it but it is brutal. I am not surprised younger players move along from playing it quickly. I was playing Arkanoid for a while (easier) but also got frustrated because of the way the ball bounces when you hit one of the baddies that move around the screen. It NEVER bounced in my favor...

Arkanoid Roms & MCU

I'm not sure it will work... as Arkanoid uses an MCU....

And I think it might be keyed to the version of roms that you use......

This was part of Taito's protection.....

Still fingers crossed.... but that would be your only problem.... I could see
