Arkanoid level editing?

Don't forget 大山のぶ代 who voiced Doraemon!

Never heard of that cartoon, so I looked it up in YouTube and checked out part of an episode. That's totally her voice, ha!

(She's not bad at Arkanoid, either.)

I did write a high score save for DoH:

http://www.scoresaves.com/DohHS.html

I have not tried to modify the levels, so I don't know how difficult that would be. It is a great sequel, and I also enjoy it more than the original.
True that the board doesn't have a microcontroller, but it does employ some kind of protection. I found this out when trying to run the World ROM version on the US board. I'm guessing the World board has a different PAL, but I don't have one of those PCBs to verify that.

Strange. I was able to swap my US board to Japan roms.

There was an editor for some version out there, but I can't remember where. It was on a site that had alot of old video game info and files and looked like a simple folder directory. Old school site for sure. It was one of the old collectors site.

I never tried the Japanese ROMs... maybe that works (is there a reason to use that over the US version?). When I put the World ROMs on the US board I found that you eventually get to a level that has no bricks....

The US version has a different first level, but the biggest flaw is that it lets you keep your high score if you continue. I suppose you could always turn off the continue feature.

Yeah that's probably the only thing I don't like about DOH either. Same thing happens with Tetris if you continue. Otherwise, DOH is an incredibly fun game and I too like it better than the original.

I've owned a cocktail of it before and now own the standup. I'd love it if there was some kind of plug & play level editor that just used a chip swap for the board; that would be awesome!

The high score save would be even more awesome if there was no soldering involved. I only install kits that are plug & play with no board modification. I guess you just can't have everything though. :)

Ah, OK... so the Jap version is like the World version. Maybe someday I'll see if I can patch the US ROM so that continue works like it the others.

i like it when the score resets as well after you loose all your vause's.
if you want it earn it.

for what i need for magfest the score reset is a must if possible.
we will be running a hi score tourny on it the whole time it is there.
a high score save in any way added is fine by me.

the continue factor is fine tho.

Peace

I believe the non-reset on continue is only an issue on Revenge of DoH. I don't think the original Arkanoid does that.

now that i think about it you are probably correct.
i have not played doh in the arcade even tho i own 2 pcb's.
i really need to get them both on a switcher in the same cab.

You guys have any pics of your project?
I won't be able to make it to MAGfest, but would love to see a shot or two of what you have been working on :)

After MAGfest, I'll post an animated GIF showing all the levels. Before then I'll post a couple pics and/or a vid showing a little preview.

that's cool don't want to give to much away;)
i put allot of hard work into this surprise for Magfest

say two interesting levels that should bee enough.

A bit off topic, but what would a freeplay mod for Ark1 or RoD entail? I always run my games on freeplay when family comes over and always have to pop the door open and credit up for them...

I wrote a quick freeplay hack for Arkanoid several years ago (back when I first started working on the kit), but I wasn't completely happy with how it worked (that code has been removed from the MAGfest version). I'll probably look into it again, but I recall it was a bit of a pain. And, like any change you want to make to Arkanoid, you have to eliminate the microcontroller first. So adding freeplay will never be as simple as just a ROM swap.
RoD, on the the other hand, might be fairly easy. But I haven't looked into it.

I got lucky w/ my R.O.D. When I bought it, it came with a tiny red 'credit' button installed above the coin slots, so I don't have to worry about that.

OK, here's a little teaser of the MAGfest X Arkanoid:

And after a bit of play testing, I've ordered the levels so they increase in difficulty (roughly anyway).

LOVE IT!!!
Sign me up for the modification rom set when/if you guys distribute this one...
The Galaga starfighter is my favorite of the few screens you posted so far...can't wait to see more vids/photos :)
