I picked up an Arkanoid machine for $100 last night... It's in a Lunar Rescue cabinet, kind of very messily wired together, the control panel was kind of messed up and I've got that mostly sorted out. The knob now works good which is what I was most concerned with so I figured I'd adjust the monitor.

It had like a dip on the side of the picture and I figured it was the vert hold. I found the pot on the board, put a screwdriver in, turned it slightly and the inside fell apart. I guess it had not been turned in a while.

I'm new to arcade machine repair and am far from confident. I can solder and such, but I don't really want to take the whole monitor board out and mess with the high voltage involved... Is these any way to fix this without taking it all out? should I find a TV repair guy to look at it?

It's worse than it was for sure, see attached before and after pictures.

Arkanoid

I bet it is a g07 that has not been capped in a while and has not had the curl mod done. g07s with Arkanoid will not have a square pic without the curl mod.

Short answer: no, you're going to have to take it out.

Longer answer: it's not as bad as you think. If you do your reading you'll find lots of info on the matter. If you still feel not up to it, I'm sure there is someone near you that can help.

first off, the problem was with the horizontal hold, despite how it looks. The monitor is turned on it's side in that cabinet, so up and down is actually horizontal.

Second, the 2nd pic shows your vertical hold is now off. You'll have to replace that pot...

I've been doing some reading and such, you're right it does not look as hard as it seems and it's something I should learn to do anyhow. Thanks for the comments :)

A cap kit and the curl mod fixed everything. Thanks again for the quick answers. I've since done a Donkey Kong and plan on doing the rest of the machines I've gotten since that first post on this topic.
