I was testing some boards for a fellow KLOV'r in my Sys1 cab when I smelled something funny and saw the ARIII board smoke from R20.

Is this a common failure on ARIIIs and can I simply replace the resistor at R20 (2.7ohm, 1W) and be done with it or is there an underlying problem that needs to be resolved as well?

I think I'm pretty safe in saying you have problems elsewhere. Replace the resistor but also check the edge connectors of the circuit board in question. What game is this?

This is common and is caused by bad edge connectors or other connections. I think they originally had 1/4 or 1/2 watt, replace with 1 watt and clean/repair edge connector.
The ARII tries to compensate for the power drop at the bad connections and causes that resistor to toast.

I was just swapping ROMs from one working Indiana Jones to one with corrupt graphics and missing speech when R20 smoked. I had the suspect board in and out of the game all night and this happened when I swapped the speech ROMs.
