Argument Starter - a Graph of how Classic Games have held up

Have played a lot of the classics on MAME recently and realized while some have held up very well and still play great, some have not. I was surprised by playing some games that I loved in the arcades in the 80s that I am disappointed in today... And conversely. I have found many games I wasn't into then, that I love now.

My graph of it all is on my MAME blog here...

Nice.

Ok - i need to argue regarding Star Wars.

First off everything else is fair. But Star Wars is a Love it Then / Love it JUST As MUCH now. The game is so well done, timeless. Graphically, sound wise, etc the game was heads and shoulders above everything else from its time, and the gameplay was challenging and smart.

Try playing on Hard and getting past the second or third waves, beating your prior high scores - this will keep you coming back to play it.

Cool graph! But I have 2 questions:

1. Did you actually play Quantum BITD? It seems very few people played this game BITD, with only about 500 of them being made. It's definitely en vogue to collectors now though.

2. YOU DIDN'T LIKE CRYSTAL CASTLES???!!!!!!!????!!!! DAMN YOU!!!! ;)

I will say though, playing certain games just doesn't come across in mame. Asteroids simply sucks balls without the cool cab and bright white vector. Part of the appeal has always been the total experience. It's hard to describe, but it's the same force that makes children stare in wonder.

Definitely played Quantum back in the day at the Student Union bldg at Univ of Illinois. That's why I looked for a nice one for years and finally bought a dedicated one a few years ago. U of I was great because it was a testing ground for so many new games.

Liked it more then than now, although I'm trying to revisit it and rekindle my love. Certainly the controls make a huge diff. I've been playing it on MAME, and clearly that's not remotely the same as the great yoke on the real thing. I've tried using a trackball (pretty good), flight stick and xbox controller (analog stick).

Controls ... & the fact that SW is a VECTOR game and you loose quite of bit when playing it on a raster monitor.
