I Picked up a area51/maximum force the other day for nice price 175. Both guns, monitor works no problems cabinet good shape. The only issue with the system is the game does not turn on. the board lights up and i hear slight humming from the HD. Screen is completely black.

what should i be checking to get this game going, should i replace the HD?

Hard drive wont keep the monitor from coming on. If the hard drive was bad, you would get garbage of some kind on the screen. Check your voltages at the power supply. Make sure monitor is getting enough or the board is getting enough.

will check that. thanks

checked and seems to start to work then it would reset and i would get a screen that would say "Drive timed out during ide int"
or "ide soft reset failed" it did that for about ten minutes then i turned it off. now when i turn it on i might get blue green screen and then it would just say drive timed out.

whats your +5 and +12 check at?

if ok, id be trying another drive.

you can get em on ebay from arcade0services pretty cheap, or if your computer smart you could image your own drive.

I worked on one that had a 5 volt problem. It was about the same error. Swapped hard drives, same error. Swapped the power supply, still had an isssue but not the same error. Found out that it was a board issue. Had to send it out for repairs. After the repaired some traces and replaced some roms, works great now.

So i check power +5 is fine. I let it run for a bit and seemed to work for about 30sec. got to opening screen hit player one, gun worked fine in stage select then it would freeze and reset did that about three times then it would go to "timed out screen"

what about +12? the hard drive runs on +12.

If thats good you need to get a known good drive in there and retest. I hope thats all it is...

Sound like the hard drive is fine. Same thing I had going on. Check the +12 to make sure.
Its the board or the secure key is not authorized. Had mine repaired by a guy in Texas that Divemaster found on ebay. Ran about $200.00.

so if i do get another HD anything particular i should be looking for or watching out for when going to purchase one. Seen flash drive and HD for sale on Ebay. any info on this would help and thanks all for the help
