i aquired an Area 51 dedicated cab with all but the power supply. i have read a few threads now but still nothing seemed to explain...just say that you may wanna use a diff PS for the HDD. it seemed to have a switcher in it before it looks like from the HDD and jamma harness but can't tell....bare wires hanging!!! uggh also, looks like there is a 110 type plug hanging from the light...i am guessing that this will plug into the ATX type PS?

so, can i use a regular switcher in this or a AT/ATX type PS or what? two power supplies? im lost cause i don't know what was actually in here in the first place and this is my first Area 51. HELP PLEASE

thanks!

You dont need a different power supply only one will be needed. The harddrive is powered off of the boardset itself with a power cable that runs from the board to the hardrive.

Judging from your explanation you should probably take pictures for us to help you.
Also if you want to convert that boardset to Area 51 and Maximum Force I have a kit I sell to do it.

I have the same game with a ATX power supply. I can take pics if it will help you figure out whats what. Ive had two Area 51's. One dedicated(which I still have) and one not. I changed them both to the combo and ToplessZ is right, the power to the HDD is off the board and not direct from the PS. They both worked really well.

that would be good if you could! here's mine with wires everywhere but should be able to figure it out though! if it's suppose to be an ATX then i will have to seperate the cabling from the ATX i guess to splice these jamma wires in! the HDD should have a plug off of the PS but not for the extra jamma wires, right?

Looking at the photo posted, I'd use an AT switcher (or ATX with a hacked motherboard connector), then test the voltages. If any are too low, I'd add a loading resistor across 5V, start at 15ohms and work your way down until you're getting the numbers you want. Scrap the HDD power cable and plug a cord from the PSU directly into the HDD.

Here are some pics. tell me what you need close-ups on.

Get an AT PC power supply, unplug the white connector in the back of the HDD, and plug the new power supply in there. Also plug the new power supply into the four-pin connector next to the JAMMA edge on the board. I bet it will power up like that.
