Area 51 in a Police Trainer?

Absolutely.

The HDD makes no difference to the rest of the machine. It's only connected to the PCB, and gets its power from it as well. I have an Area 51 (well, actually A51/Max Force Duo) in my Lethal Enforcers cab (which was a Police Trainer conversion cab when I got it).

It'll work as long as it:
-is JAMMA pinout
-is standard resolution
-is horizontal monitor orientation
-has a compatible gun pinout (Happ 4-pin is most common), or adapter
-doesn't require any buttons beyond 1 & 2PL start (unless you add more to your CP)

So far, I can confirm the following are all interchangable (with a little creativity on audio wiring of the Atari games), because I've played them in my cab:
-Police Trainer
-Lethal Enforcers
-Sharpshooter
-Area 51
-Maximum Force
-Area 51 / Maximum Force Duo

I'm sure there are more that could be added to that list, like Egg Venture & Lethal Enforcers 2, but I haven't personally tested them.

You can add Target Terror to that list.. I have target terror kits...

Interesting.

I thought Target: Terror was VGA... but I just downloaded & read a manual, and apparently it has dipswitch selectable VGA/Medium/Standard rez.

Yup, the Jamma IO has a dipswitch bank, dips 1,2,3 - ON for STD Res, rest OFF

How about Carnival King or Carnevil? Target Teror is a great way to blow off steam, especially the Gold version.

Zero Point 1 & 2
- but sound wiring modification needed, despite being jamma. the typical SPK+/- is actually L+/R+ and you need to run a GND line to SPK- to make it work. I wired up a "double-throw" toggle switch. the original game is much better than the sequel.

Rapid Fire
- another point blank ripoff, and not much of one.

Locked & Loaded
- the gun wiring is odd, it is not the typical 4-pin connector, must create an adapter.

Does it matter what monitor you use if the cabinet is mirrored? Would I be able to pull a 25 inch monitor from a non-mirrored shooter and swap it into the mirrored shooter? The mirrored is Lethal Enforcers 2 and the non-mirrored is Police Trainer. Basically, is the setup any harder on a mirrored screen is what I guess I am asking.

Ahh, yes, the mirrored cabinet issue. I forgot to discuss that...

Some games were designed to accomidate both mirrored and direct-view installations. Lethal Enforcers, Police Trainer, Sharpshooter, for example, all have settings for both. However, some games, such as Area 51, do NOT have a setting for a mirrored cabinet.

So, to solve the problem, what I did on my mirrored cabinet (originally a LE) was to swap the vertical yoke wires. Now, a "normal" orientation video output looks upside-down if I look directly at the monitor (in its conventional orientation) but it then looks normal when viewed in the mirror. Effectively my cabinet/monitor now functions like a direct-view, so I set any options/dipswitch for regular (non-flipped).

[Of course, if I ever took this monitor out and put it in a direct-view cabinet, I'd need to swap the yoke wires back to normal or everything would be upside-down.]

4pin gun goes to ... What on area 51/max force board.??

I have a police trainer and thought i could just swap borads, but i don't know where to plug in guns.
I see you indicate there is a conversion for the current guns to fit in the area 51/max force board? Where do i buy that and will it apparent where tp plug them in?
Thanks a lot

Are your guns 4-pin? If so, look closely at the gun header on the A51 PCB. It should say "HAPP" by one end of it, and have "RED" "WHT" etc. by the 4 pins at one end. Plug in standard (Happ) 4-pin guns at that end of the connector, with the colors matching the labels on the PCB.

Thanks

Yes guns definitely 4 pin. Surpisingly, or not really, i think your original post was why i bought the area 51 board to begin with.
I will do this when i get a chance this week.
I really appreciate yor help.

Can guns be split between 2 boards

Well your directions were outstanding and the area 51/max force board works great.
One more question: i have a Holland Computer arcade 2 in 1 jamma switch control.
Can i split the wires for the guns and plug each gun into both boards. Only one board would be powered at any given time.
Thanks again.

I've never messed with JAMMA switcher rigs, so I'm not the guy to answer this question.

I think I've ready a couple of others post about that working, but that may have been using a rig that kept both PCBs powered... not really sure.

Seems like I also remeber a thread about a diode board for this application... but I may be mis-remembering that, too.

Not sure why I'm posting, really... I have little to add...

Splitting guns worked fine

Ok so here are the results. This is a police trainer cab and board. I bought an Area 51/Maximum force combo board with hard drive. I installed a holland computers 2 in 1 jamma swither board. I wanted to have the police trainer board in slot one as that is the one that displays on power on but that was not possible. I had to put area 51 into slot one because of he cooler block on that board. The switcher powers both boards on power on. So I used this post from DogP:

"I have Area 51 Site 4 and Area 51/Max Force in the same cab using a JAMMA 2 way switcher. IIRC I just split the wires between the two cabs, except only hooked +5V to the gun to one of the boards (my switcher powers both boards at the same time). I can't say that all boards will work that way, or that it'll work for more than two boards, but it worked for me.

It'd be easy enough to buffer it for each board if necessary, but I'm not aware of any "off the shelf" board/cables you can buy to split the guns for a multi-JAMMA setup.

Edit: Looks like Topless might have a plug and play solution for you.

DogP"

I split the gun wires as he suggested and t worked perfectly. So that's that. Thanks for all the help!
