Are CRT monitors available new or not?

That is a damn good question. Unless you find an op with some nib monitors in his warehouse, the days of new crt monitors are just about done.

The next best thing you can get is a tv (no burn of course) with a 10 pin neck. Ohm the yoke. Get a universal chassis. Put the whole mess togther on a used monitor frame, tada new(ish) monitor.

Likewise you can get a old monitor, recap it, swap the yke onto a tv tube ans tada, new(ish) monitor.

you could try alva
http://alvaamusement.com/id4.html

or 8 liners?
http://8liners.com/parts.html

ive heard mixed reviews of both but 8liners does show new for $150 each

Are there company's that sell these "swaps"?

Can't believe there isn't a Mexican or Chinese company still making these.

Supply and Demand. There isn't enough demand for a Chinese or Mexican.. or anyone to make CRTs anymore. Its not a profitable product. We all will eventually have to convert to LCDs at some point if we want to keep playing. The sad fact is..as technology moves forward older components are no longer being manufactured because most industries no longer have a need for them.

Yeah it sucks. Whats sad is we all saw the end coming and most of us didnt buy a couple to save for a rainy day. Itll make things pretty profitable for those who did, however.

Here is the type of chassis you could use with a tv tube and yoke on a old arcade monitor frame:

THere are basically two different chassis depending on the ohm readings of the yoke on your donor tv tube.

I bought a Vision Pro a few weeks ago for $169 on the interwebs. They are out there but it's slim pickins or big bucks.

This should probably be a sticky in the monitor section. Something about options for monitors - LCD, new?, old, rebuild, etc... It gets brought up a lot.

Yep, definitely. And to the people that think the days of CRT monitors in our games are numbered... keep thinking that way... it makes it easier for those of us who refuse to believe that to keep fixing our monitors and/or turning TV tubes into arcade monitors. :D

That will be a sad sad day when we run out of picture tubes espc. for all those gun games that will not work with out them. I bought a CRT monitor off overstock but that was two years ago and it's since failed....

I bought two brand new 25" Makvision flat CRT's from Happ and I couldn't be happier. They look great! The viewable area is about 24" after installation, but for what it is, it is a great monitor. They are brand new and available from Happ.com

If you find them, and if you have a bunch of games you want to keep going for the foreseeable future, it's a good idea to stockpile. :D

New CRT monitors will be available here and there due to old stock or private parties selling them off. The question I want an answer to is if they're still being made at all.

A number of posters have been told by various suppliers that CRT's simply aren't being made anymore. Aside from polling every factory in China I don't think you can ever say for certain no one makes CRT's anymore, but I doubt it. It makes sense when you think about it as aside from arcade games and other even smaller hobbies who would prefer to buy a more expensive CRT over a much cheaper and more modern LCD? The fact LCD's are cheaper to manufacture than CRTs has pretty much guaranteed CRTs are done.

At some point in the next few years folks will be saying the same exact thing regarding buying $5 and $10 19" tv's at thrift stores. Grab 'em while you can boys ;)...

There are still TONS of tubes to be salvaged for dirt cheap or free. People are still restoring TVs from the 40s, 50s, lots of Predictas, etc.. I see no reason why I can't have CRT monitors working in all of my games 25yrs from now. Probably will just need to replace caps and some odds and ends in that time.

I feel this is a really 'newb' thing to ask, but would it be possible to have some sort of converter to go from typical arcade video input and convert to plug right into a late model TV (like RCA aud/vid, coax, etc.)? Too much signal degradation in the process? I don't need this, but sounds like some would like an easier way to swap a decased late model TV into a monitor frame.

Grabbed an 8-pin, high resistance TV from the curb today along with two 13" TVs that I haven't taken apart yet. :D There was a third 13" TV that someone tried to take a brick to(the brick was actually still on top of it) so the tube face was scratched/chipped too much to use otherwise that'd be here too...

I don't have any links or sources, but I've heard from the local electronics professor that Russia is still making CRT tubes. He seems to think they will continue to make them similar to how there are some factories making nixie tubes in russia. (this probably means the price will go up, though)
