Arcadization Project - Virtual Boy!

Today I added pinball style buttons to the sides for Galactic Pinball.

I also put on the first coat of primer. Thanks Phet for the advice! Being a computer programmer my CTS started acting up holding down the sprayer on the can. I was hoping to find a cheap primer that I could use with the HVLP but I ended up using Rustoleum automotive primer as Phet suggested. I also hate painting outside it was a beautiful day but the wind would kick up every time I went to paint! With wife pregnant I didn't want to paint at home, and my Dad's hot rod in his garage it didn't leave me much choice.

I also have decided on a control layout. The Joysticks will be towards the top center with the two buttons per side on the lower outsides slightly diagonal from each other, the outside buttons being a little higher, and the inside being a little lower. This way I can press the any of the 3 (R,A,B on the right and L,Select, Start on the left) buttons on each side comfortably without moving my hand. The buttons on the top of the joys will be L and R that way if my had is on the joy I can press the corresponding L or R button. The cabinet side buttons are also L and R. I think that will work great for pretty much any VB game.

Here are the controls as they would be laid out:

Painting Half Done!

So today I got the black paint on the cabinet. I masked off the outsides. Then I mixed 2 parts Rustoleum Semi-Gloss Enamel and 1 part Rustoleum Flat black and 1 part Acetone. I found when painting the Simpsons cabinet that the flat black came off like a chalk board until I waxed it.

The paint went on well, although I had the air pressure too high at first. My arms ended up painted.

I still have to paint the outsides red, but I think that I will roll that on. The reason I sprayed the black on was because it would be a real pain to get inside all the cracks and crevices. The outsides are nice and flat so it will roll on nice and easy and my arms won't end up painted. :)

Edit:

I was thinking about combining Virtual Boy and Battle Zone and call it:

VIRTUAL BOYZONE

But then is sounded like a NAMBLA clubhouse. So I think I will just call it:

VIRTUAL ZONE

i'm thinking rattle can for refinishing the fronts and backs of my cabs.

nvm i see on your other post it's hvlp. they make a cheater handle/holster thing for spray can's i'll prolly get myself one of those.

I just called it a HVLP, but I don't really know, neither does my dad. It has a can with a straw. I put the paint in and pulled the trigger. The last time I painted anything using an air compressor it was my 1975 250cc Kawasaki F11 when I was in 6th grade (1986). It came out awesome too. I still have the bike in the basement. It is tucked behind my furnace along with my 1976 Honda MR 250 Elsinore. I don't want them taking up too much room in my basement arcade. ;)

Edit:
The can is on the bottom so it must be a siphon feed. Works great, goes though paint like crazy.

Edit 2:
It is coming home (across the street) tommorrow once it is dry. I will finish the painting at home.

ah yea that's a siphon feed, old school style, but they work well. i might actually go that route once i get a new compressor my last ones motor gave out after 13 years.

btw i measured both cabs tonight, 20 feet of t-molding would have barely done the mk cab (needs 23' atleast) and the spiderman cab requires 33 feet atleast.

I measured my Gaplus and Galaxian and they are both 8 feet per side, so 16 feet per cabinet.

The Simpsons cabinet came to 22⅓ feet and my HS-5 Dynamo is 26 feet.

i was surprised to find that there's t-molding along the bottom of the Spider-Man.

tell your dad nice roadster :D

I hate that roadster because I can't sit in it, if you are taller then 5' 10 you won't either. I am 6' and I can't cram myself in. I wish he got a 32 duce like he used to have before I was born. I could fit in it. I think he got the T because he knew all his sons wouldn't be able to drive it. :D

lol i'm about 6 foot so yea it would be tricky for me, I have an 85 vette it's a pain to get in and out of also but so much fun. when i wipe down the interior if i get any on the seats and wear the right pants i can slide around in the seats sometimes lol.

It is just impossible with this truck, the gas pedal is right under the steering wheel and I can't fit my leg cause of the wheel. I can ride as a passenger but it still is cramped.

lol the steering wheel is part of my issue besides the knee buster under it. thank jeebus for the power adjustable seats in it that tilt, go up and down, back and forth, and keeps your buns warm lol.

Now I know what you needed those joysticks for :D

But should they be on the sides with the buttons in the middle?

I put a lot of thought into it and I think it is best to put the joys in the middle.

And yes thanks for those joys! I need to leave glowing feed back for you! :D

Oh... if you weren't set on doing the infinity mirror marquee, the other thing I was thinking would be cool is a lenticular marquee. I dunno how expensive that would be, especially looking decent backlit... but I think that'd be quite awesome. There may even be DIY lenticular stuff, but backlit inkjet doesn't usually look that great.

Where did I say I wasn't going to do the infinity mirror? It is still happening. I just needed to figure out where to get the film needed. And I have. :D

I was just throwing out another idea, which would probably look really cool as well.
