Arcadization Project - Donkey Kong '94

Yeah, but move the word DONKEY KONG up a bit and drop that TM down and to the right.

Leave the Donkey Kong vertically centered like the original. Move the 94 to the right under KONG. It will help eat up some of that blank blue area.

I actually liked the apostrophe for what it's worth.

Is this what you meant?

Tighe,
I like this best.
I have them all from the start and this seems the most balanced when viewing in a slide show.

I like to blow out the saturation & contrast to accentuate the toon style but that's just me :p

It may not look as good on a cab though.

Actually looking at it on here.. it's a bit too much saturation.. so I guess 20% less would be optimum.

The washed out color is just because I exported the image from CMYK color from Illustrator without any correction. It looks great printed.

So nobody liked the apostrophe? :(

I liked it, but if this were for me, I'd move the '94 to the right, that way it will cover most of that plain blue area. I'd also move the main image up (or expand it) so theres less of the plain sky background. Just my two cents.

This thread is awesome, great work Tighe! On the other hand I feel like I am at work, and the client is saying they want their logo bigger. It was funny to me, carry on.

Damn it! Everyone is noticing the blue sky on the right! The box art had a crane there originally but the super gameboy logo cut into it so much that I just removed it. There is a unatulterated duotone version of the cover art in the manual and spoonmanx was kind enough to scan it for me, so I could cut it out and colorize it and add it back in.

Here is the duotone image, what do you think, should I put the crane back in?

Yes put the crane back in! You should be able to clean it up and color it. Also, I really liked the apostrophe and think it looks weird without it.

I still like the idea moving the '94 to the right. Offset to the right 1/3 makes it look better and more interesting.

Moving the 94 off-center is not happening. ;-)

I will add the crane from the duotone image.

Thanks!

I thought I would give this a try, I was feeling crazy:

This!! I love it! Apostrophe looks a little big, but that's being nitpicky. Also, to be MORE nitpicky, try rounding out the points in the star in the number 9. It'll look more like the original star that way.

Now it looks like the chick's madly reaching for that giant tilted 4.

"Damn monkey, you can't take me until I get my 4!"

:)

Tighe, you're getting caught up on details. It's going to turn you into a Crazy Kong. :p

I think the last revision looked nice. The crane would help fill in the sky, but I don't honestly think it needs it.

I would also stick with the crane from the same source 1200dpi cover
GB-DonkeyKong-vgo-small.jpg

or else it might look off.
Especially when printed at 30x40 or whatever the size ends up being. Just cover the very top of the crane with the logo.

Or another option would be to move the entire picture up and to the left by .5"

The image is already as high as it can go, I can't make it go any higher, to blow it up wider as DK and Mario won't fit.

Put the crane in..leave everything else like you had it..and your done. No major blue sky and everything else is proportioned..IMO.

Question is, can you recreate the crane as it's supposed to be? Too bad you don't have the original art piece before the Super GameBoy logo got plastered onto it....or do you?

The duotone image is the same, just in two colors. I can reproduce using the box scan and the duotone image overlaying them and lining them up and then using the duotone for the missing portions and colorizing it to match.

The image is just so massive (2400dpi so it could be blown up the side art size) I am not looking forward to reprocessing it. I will probably do it over the weekend if I get a chance.

I still have to vectorize other art from the manual to use in the marquee, bezel and control panel. Those were printed to tiny that even when spoonmax scanned it at 1200dpi it is mostly dots.

Here is one image scanned at 1200dpi, as you can see I have my work cut out for me, I can't just descreen it, it was very tiny originally (1/2 an inch wide).
