Can we list arcades in Maryland? Besides Crabtowne and Dave &Busters, are there any arcades left in Maryland that have more than a few games in them?

It is so hard for a guy over 40 to believe that a day would come when only a few arcades would be left scattered about. Between that and the drive in's being gone, it's a real bummer.

Taxes have killed the arcades in Maryland. 10% of gross sales in most jurisdictions goes to the state, plus county licenses (250 per game per year in Baltimore city and Baltimore county, $2000 operator license in AA County).

Did you know that Crabtowne pays AA county $5000 per year for their arcade license because they have more than 8 games on site? Plus 10% of gross to the state.

It is fucking nuts.

Adding to that, if you want a cool arcade experience and you're in Baltimore, take the drive up to Hanover Mall in PA to Timeline. It is roughy an hour from Baltimore. Brandon does a good job, and he needs our support!

Mike,
I did know the costs of amusement devices as most jurisdictions have called them. I appreciate you putting it here though so others can see the road blocks to the future of gaming placed by the counties. I have been up to Timeline and I am planning on going back up there again soon. Brandon is a great guy doing a great thing for us all. The place has been pretty busy the two times I have made the journey (more than an hour each way).

Timeline IS a great place! Some of us might consider the time and gas cost to get there, but consider this as well...

My 5 year old and I spent over 2 hours up there, and I only spent $20! Where else, in this day and age, can you occupy a 5 year old for an entire afternoon for twenty dollars, plus get to have some fun yourself!

Afterwards, there's a sub shop in there that makes a really good cheese steak. I talked to the owner, and he says that he tries to make it the way they do at Tony Luke's in Philly. It was like $6. Good stuff! Plus, Jerry and Sals pizza in the mall makes great pizza and salads. Their antipasti salad is the bomb.

Maybe we should do a KLOV get together at Timeline. Pull guys from the pa/md/de group or wherever. I know Brandon would be on board. I don't think he's struggling per se, but I know how tough it is to make money with an arcade. I used to own the arcade that was previously in Hanover Mall (after Alladins Castle). The mall has gotten better since then, but it is still a mall... They don't draw the traffic like they used to. Plus, Branden's got those classics at a quarter a play (card swipe), so he's literally making it a quarter at a time.

Mike,
That's sounds like a great idea. The games there are in WAY better shape than Crabtowne and we can support someone that appreciates the games as much as we do!
