Arcade Wars: Vertical Shooters - Old School vs New(er) School

The latest "Arcade Wars" on my site is a mano a mano battle. Click on the link below to line up and choose your side... Vertical Shooters, do you prefer Old School (Galaga, Phoenix, etc) or New(er) School (Esp.Ra.De, 1941. etc)

Any type of shooter other than an Isometric shooter (like your game of the day) is a good shooter :D

To me, it's like arguing old Star Trek vs. new Star Trek. Different eras = not really an easy comparison.

(And also kinda nerdy.) :D

I object...I think the whole premise of the question is asinine. Simply put, every game from Galaga forward is the same game. And I love them all. And where would you even draw the line between what's old shooters and new shooters. What makes 1941 a new shooter and 1942/43 and old shooter. What about galaga. Is Gaplus/Galaga3 old shooters or new. What about Galaga '88 or Namco Classics collection. Is raiden 1 an old or new. If its old then when in the Raiden series would you consider it new. What about R-Type, and Life Force/Gradius. I consider the games classics but its not like the sequels of those games are really significantly different enough to call them new. So without a true line in the dirt to separate old/new how is the laymen shooter fan to discern what is the better half. And like I first said, I consider everything from Galaga forward to be the modern form of Shootemups. Which means everything before is Space Inaders and Galaxian. In which case, I'd have to go with new shootemups. Confused yet. I know I am. :)
