Guys,

Quick question. I am contemplating a multicade and hear lots of great things about the original Bally Midway 4-way joysticks. I realize that will limit use on many 8-way games on the board. Would likely use it for vertical games. I really want the game mostly for the more popular classics which seem to utilize the 4-way.

Am I missing any major games on the board which use the 8-way? I guess I am really asking which games on the vertical list use require the 8-way. Thanks in advance.

Xevious, Robotron, and Bosconian to name a few.

Robotron and Bosconian are horizontal games. Additionally, Bosconian is not supported by the ArcadeSD at all (it is not on the list at Phoenix Arcade anyway).

Joysticks are a individual preference by far.
But I would recommend looking at the Ultimarc Magstick Plus.
This is a 4-8 way switchable (no need to go inside the machine!) joystick.

It tends to be a bit stiff with the stock micro switches,
I was shown a trick of swapping them out with Cherry brand Micro's and it softens considerably.

Anyway, in the 4 way mode, the restrictor plate is a diamond shape, which gives it the true 4 way "feel" as with the Classic 4 ways of old.

Need an 8 way, you just pull up on the handle and twist and it's done! :D

One of the biggest negatives for some is that it has a short throw, very small movements.
This can actually be a positive too in that I have mounted a few into stock Galaga slot style joystick holes and have 4/8 way movement in a 2 way hole. No need to modify the original panel! Does very well as a 2 way Galaga stick as there isn't that Rubber feel to it like the Wico sticks have. (My biggest complaint on my Multi-Williams is the Wico joysticks used when playing Joust).

Anyway, thought I'd throw that out there.
My personal favorite solution to the 4-8 way Dilemma.
You will spend $50-$60 on it shipped though, including the optional red ball stick.

if you are going with the arcadeSD and vertical games.

why not find the midway 49 way stick and a 3inch happ trackball.
it'll have you covered for all games, the SW somehow knows how to switch modes for the games? (i have these items but haven't yet installed them...)

i have an old midway pacman 4 way stick right now running the vertical games and you can adjust the leafs in so it plays 8way. for example, i play frenzy nicely with the pacman stick. like the short movements.

I created this for myself to help me decide what I wanted to do with the control panel and thought I'd pass it along. Didn't feel like wading through the 150 pages on the other thread to see if someone had already done this.
It's a sortable spreadsheet with the game list and types of controllers / buttons each game takes. All the info came from KLOV or memory (sorry if I made a mistake on one I'm unfamiliar with, but mostly they should be pretty accurate).

I just lumped the Vs stuff together because I know I'm not going to have a Vs style panel....not enough room on most CPs for that. Guess I should've said that up front. Feel free to modify and repost... I think what I have listed are the minimum requirements to play the game. I started out with the simultaneous games listed properly then changed it.
