I had to let go of my faithful companion late yesterday after a short battle with cancer. Duke, defender of dedicated classic arcade games and loyal foot soldier in the war on conversions and multi-games is gone. He witnessed many arcade restorations in his long life and was always there with his tail wagging in approval. A lot of klovers met this dog over the past 11+ years. I know some of you were very fond of him.

Rest in peace my loyal friend. I will miss you dearly.

Never easy to lose a pet/companion/part of your family. So sorry to hear, Dave. :(

That sucks Dave. I am sorry for your loss. It isn't fair that dogs only live 1/8 as long as we do, especially when they really become part of the family. My grandparents seem to go through this once every 12-15 years. They always say "That's it, no more, I can't lose another one" and within a year have a new one to start the process all over again. Chin up man, he lived a good life.

Sorry to hear this:( Not sure what to say its hard to loose a friend, just remember all the great times you guys had.

What prompted that decision? Last week you told me he was given about 6 months to live you were looking to spend as much quality time as possible with him. :004_scry:

Sorry for your loss, Dave. I know how much Duke was part of your family.
Karim and I send our condolences, and we will miss being greeted by him.
He definitely had a great life, and lived it to the fullest until the end.

Sorry, man. I had to let go of our beloved German Shepherd, Rolo, just about a year ago. We still talk about him every day. Hopefully your boy is romping around right now on a perfect beach or forest with the rest of our friends that have crossed over.

I'm right there with you! I had to put down my 17 1/2 yr old dog last Friday. She had end stage kidney failure. :(

They really are a big part of the family and the house was too empty without her. We picked up 2 puppies on Monday.

He was doing great and then had a sudden adverse reaction to the medicine he was on. He went from doing fine to really bad shape in a matter of a few hours. The specialist thinks the medicine caused an ulcer in his stomach that was very painful , he stopped eating and he could barely even move.He spent the night at the vet to get it under control but as soon as he got back home he deteriorated rapidly. He would not eat and could not walk he was in so much pain. He would have had to spend several days in the hospital to get it under control if at all possible and then would still be battling the cancer. The drugs to battle the cancer would have kept causing him to have the stomach problems. He really was suffering the last day. Everyone in charge of his care felt it was the best move for him. He was fine up until the 4th of July and was still running along side me on my mountain bike like he had for the past 11 years. He only had 2 bad days in his entire life. There is not much more I could ask for than that. This is him at the Snake River on July 3rd :

My condolences. Dogs can touch us in so many ways and become such a part of our lives that saying goodbye is heartwrenching. Cancer claimed both my mother and my beloved Boxer in 2004. Hang in there, time won't heal your heart, but it will soothe the pain...

Well, sorry to hear that Dave. You obviously made the right choice for him, albeit a very painful one I am sure.

Hang in there, Dave. Chows are definitely awesome dogs.

Cool that you had a 'lot of miles' with Duke... It's never easy losing a pet. :(

I'm sorry for your loss. We went through that about 10 years ago with our first yellow Lab (hence Yellowdog). He had a malignant tumor removed, it came back about 2 years later. We had the new one removed and within 3 weeks he had a tumor in his throat go from non-existant to large lemon sized. It was time to let go then.

There are plenty of dogs I would rather hang with than some people. It sounds like yours would have been one of those.

We keep saying that we are not going to replace pets as attrition begins to take them, but my wife just can't stop bringing them home. We are now back at full strength with 2 dogs and 2 cats. We almost went 6 months without replacing the last cat. A week and a half ago, my wife tried to smuggle a 6 month old black cat into the house while she thought I wasn't looking. So Whiskey, (full name: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot) is now a full fledged member of the menagerie.

Give it some time. When the time is right, you'll find another arcade deal sniffing companion.
