still working on my allied crack shot, and will be for quite a while. i was running it ,and one of the projector bulbs popped, the glass shattering . maybe it was damaged, but i think it was from heat. they generate a lot of heat, and the only cooling is louvers on one side of the lamp box, and the hole where the light comes out, about the size of a nickle. no fans. there are 5 projectors .

i put black tape around the edges of the lamp boxes. when they folded the sheet metal, there were gaps, and light bleeding thru looks like crap on the screen. i also put tape around the edge of the bulb holder, light bleeds out of there too. 100% improvement in the images. could closing up the gaps cause an over heating condition?

i have to add, i disconneted the timer motor, so i wouldnt have to keep starting the game while testing it.. maybe i ran it too long. it didnt seem long and a kid with a lot of quarters could have run it just as hard.

it uses 150 watt 120 volt T10 4-Pin (G17q) Base 3,100K CAR Overhead Projector / Stage / Studio GE Light Bulb .

any thoughts or experiences like this?

thanks
mike

I believe a type "CAR" projection lamp can be run without forced air cooling for a while in certain applications. These bulbs were generally used in schools in filmstrip and slide projectors which did have forced air cooling.

Some things that can kill a projection lamp suddenly or prematurely:

1. Vibration, especially when the bulb is operating and hot.

2. Clogged fan blades or fan wot working.

3. Bad lamp socket contacts or bulb not fully seated in socket.

4. Overvoltage

5. Bulb is past it's rated life. A "CAR" bulb is rated for 15 hours.

you are correct on the hr rating. i'm thinking if it was hours, it just would have burned out. the glass breaking makes me think heat. i'm actually thinking of a little compressor blowing air into the lamp boxes thru plastic tubing if this keeps happening.
