TL;DR version I'm a new member, is it rude to message someone who says they have a game for sale in the database?

Hi everyone, I've been excited about arcades since I was a kid, and I've finally decided to take the plunge and try my hand at collecting and restoring what I can get my hands on. While I definitely have fond memories of Ms. Pac-Man and Pole Position, I grew up in arcades during the Street Fighter craze of the 90s, so I definitely have a soft spot for games of that era. The prospect of having to restore an arcade machine seemed really daunting, but after following the forums here, along with Youtube shows like John's Arcade and Arcade Impossible, it felt more like you can do just about anything with enough care and patience.

I'm in the process of acquiring a candy cabinet, an MVS system, and a couple of CPS2 games. While my kids are really young, I think leaving the wife at home for the weekend while I go to an arcade auction or warehouse raid is probably out of the question, though I am totally fascinated by the process of finding those rough gems and polishing them back into shape.

If they state that a game is for sale, it's not rude to message them. Just don't annoy people with "Would you sell X game?" if it's not expressly listed as being for sale. (This happened to me multiple times from a member who's since been banned. It's really irritating.)

welcome and ask away if they list it for sale. good luck on your search.

Just the fact that you are conscientious enough to check in advance is a great sign. Welcome! Where are you from in VA?

I completely sympathize with your family obligation restrictions. I've had to pass on most of the social elements of the community due to daddy duty. It doesn't cut into play time, since the games can help distract the little folks, but it does cut into repair/restore time significantly.

I'm in Fairfax, but I grew up around Fairfax Station and Springfield. Back between like 1989-2000 I spent a ton of time in Springfield Mall's Time-Out and later at GameTime in Alexandria. That's where I really fell in love with Street Fighter, 90s beat em ups like Alien vs. Predator, X-Men, and Punisher. A couple years back I was trying to be competitive in SF4 and Marvel, traveling to local tournaments and even to Xanadu up near Baltimore but the little guys put that on hold for a bit. It's all good, these days the Mrs. and I stay up playing Overwatch while they're in bed :)

I stopped with Overwatch because the game got too popular, too many tards griefing the server. Ashame, love the game, and it's a big reason why I'm trying to build up my own arcade of games I can enjoy and remove myself from online play altogether. This generation playing online is a joke. I usually end up on old-school servers for Enemy Territory and COD:WAW where the players aren't shitheads towards each other. A fan-effort just brought back Battlefield 2 and 2142 (2142 was fun), been enjoying that lately.

The metagame is a funny thing. I played a ton of Rainbow Six Vegas and you could pinpoint the exact day the new CoD came out because suddenly everyone in games got really polite. The jerks tend to leave for the next big thing quickly, and I'm thankful Blizzard is staying on top of bans.

Though TBH I've played so much Enemy Territory I don't blame you =)
