What type of music do you think goes best with an arcade? I personally think that 80's music goes best when you are hanging out and gaming on arcade machines. What is everyone else's thoughts?

I put on hardcore rap. I also hand out blades so people can carve their initials in my games.

While a computer with music files or a CD changer are far more convenient solutions, I went retro with a jukebox. It's a smaller one, 100 selection, so it only holds 50 records. It's fun, every time I go to a flea market or yard sale I keep my eyes open for good stuff on 45. Lot of great 80's songs out there that go well with the games. And yes, I do have Pac-Man Fever in there.

Just ghetto blast "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" and have a gasoline fight. That always gets things going. Just make sure people don't light up any cigarettes afterwards.

I'm of the opinion you shouldn't play music at all in an arcade. The games are already competing for volume; you don't want to make it worse. This goes double if you have any Bemani / PiU / other music/rhythm games.

Yup... I had a beatmania machine. HOLY MOTHER OF NOISE!!! It drowned all my classic games out entirely. Granted the volume could be tweaked but you can't really play beatmania w/o music. The game now lives with my ex-wife so the cade is back to normal audio levels... weeeeeeeee

I play some 80s MTV videos on my new projector and 80" screen ,they have about 60 videos on each DVD and I have 12 of them, they are a favorite with guests I always get the wow I havent seen that video since 1982 lol!

That's cool. Even without sound (or low volume), that would be a great visual to add to the game room.

I put on a wide range of stuff when I'm playing. I'm working on an 80s mix right now that's almost 60 minutes of continuously mixed singles from the 80s interspersed with samples from video games, 80s movies, etc. Everything is woven together so the songs don't start and end, they just meld together.

I prefer a mix of genres of the late 70's to late 80's, such as classic rock, new wave, "hair bands", etc. This type of stuff works for me because it is representative of what was played in the arcades in the years I was visiting them (likely the same for many people on this forum). I certainly listen to lots of different music today (I'm not stuck in a time warp), but when trying to create an arcade vibe or feel, this is the type of stuff that works for nostalgia. Examples:

Duran Duran
Men At Work
Devo
Ratt
The Cars
Quiet Riot
Def Leppard
Van Halen
Billy Idol
The Police
ZZ Top
Journey
Michael Jackson (Thriller album specifically)
Scoprions
Boston
Huey Lewis
Prince
Tears For Fears
Modern English
Ozzy Osborne (early stuff)
Aerosmith
Styx

I have a jukebox in mine as well.

It was filled with 50's stuff when I bought it. It's good stuff... just not arcade stuff. Slowly filling it with 80's 90's music.

I also hacked in an audio jack so an MP3 player whatever can be played in the jukebox speakers.

I too have Pac Man fever in there. Also Star Wars Disco. Also Rick Astley -Never Gonna Give You Up... labeled as The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.

I tried to acquire CD jukeboxes in the past, but other than select sized wallboxes, I just don't have room for a full sized jukebox. That's why I decided to go the route of converting a Midway (hey, it's Midway afterall) Touchmaster Infinity (mini of course, if you know what I collect!) to a touchscreen jukebox. It is running as I type this with some cool Asia (Heat of the Moment). :) When I am done it will be mostly late 70's, heavily 80's, a little 90's, and with a little of this and that thrown in for the younger crowd (gameroom parties).

The original, working Touchmaster computer is available if anyone is interested (see the FS/FT post).

I bought those DVD's as well.. now I just need to find a large DVD changer or a way to rip them to the computer and randomly play them. Later prefferred. Anyone have a solution?

To answer my own question... I found that VLC that randomize a playlist of videos automatically. The get the individual videos from the dvds, you need to use a program called handbrake to rip them to individual files. It works really well. Now I need to get an older projector with a decent bulb and a dedicated computer to run it.
