How many arcade hoarders are out there?

I'm fairly new to this hobby but man... I see lots of people who just buy up any part, machine or whatever and just sit on the items without ever restoring....

Some folks have house, garage and storage shed full of great parts or games that never see the light of day.

Is this really helping or hurting the hobby? :001_sbiggrin:

I get my projects done, but I do have too many games. I always have 1 or 2 projects in the garage and try to stay true to that. Extra parts I buy when I think the price is right.

who has the most money and buys stuff in this hobby, wins.

correct. we save the stuff. it doesnt have to get played 24/7. it just needs to be saved
from the cruel dark world of being recycled or burned.

it helps them from being destroyed. i have 30+ games. i havent turned one on in 6+ months. no time. but i got them. i own them. all mine. none are up for sale/trade. :)

That's not the wisest thing to say to a community of collectors.

The next time you come here looking for a rare or hard to find part to fix a new game you've picked up, you may rethink that comment.

haha.. this ought to go well.

Depends on the scenario I guess. If someone is hoarding stuff just to hoard with no intention of using that stuff for themselves or to help the community, then that's pretty stupid. However, if it's their stuff they can do as they wish and shouldn't have to worry about backlash from the community.
I think a more important question to ask would be "is the hoarding really helping or hurting your home life?

how so? i know 100's of collectors. everything is up for sale for the right price. I've had
zero problems buying anything and never will have any issues. maybe only a hand few
out of 100's or 1000's. so i think i'm 100% fine with my statements and i will not re-think
any of my comments. even then, there's always ebay, CL, FB, and reddit! :)

They aren't going in a land fill or thrown off a building soooo.....

True...good point..

Agreed. I've already acquired a few extra parts and I've only been doing this a few weeks. Lol

I don't think was meant to slam anyone.. just an observation of the extream cases...

True...if your broke but have 50+ arcade games laying around then....

Well said.

Ultimately it's your time and money so anyone can do as they wish. I was just wondering how many great games are sitting in garages that can bring joy and happiness to family's like they have to mine....

Gleek is back. Haven't seen much of you around recently.

I simply meant that it's 'hoarders' that end up preserving many of the rare and hard to find parts and games in this hobby. And many of the warehouse raids we all enjoy are the result of 'hoarding' to some degree.

Everything makes its way back into the ecosystem eventually (even if it's when the collector dies). And may people who hoard stuff do sell it eventually, for whatever someone will pay for it.

But it's stuff like that that keeps this hobby alive, and provides parts to keep many games running and complete. Else much of this stuff would have ended up in a landfill years ago.

Just because that game in storage isn't being restored and played right now, doesn't mean it won't be eventually, by a future collector.

I dunno. Life happens. Sometimes you go balls deep into this hobby.

Sometimes you have extra disposable income, sometimes you don't.

Sometimes you have the time to fix and restore your games.

Sometimes you have that nostalgic feeling and turn your games on and play/enjoy them.

It changes week to week, month to month, year to year.

All I know is all the hard work, time & effort, and all the friends I've made with this hobby.

Sure, I'm up for trade or some games would be for sale (at a high premium) because
I have emotional attachment to my stuff. I like it. Even if it does sit and collect dust.
My entire collection was a hard enough journey to acquire and I am in no rush to
part with any of it.

well said! work has been keeping me ultra busy lately. i barely have time to keep up
with the forums, watch all my tv series and movies, listen to all the new endless
music, and work on my arcade games, along with playing new steam games, and
nintendo switch games too (mario odyssey), and ps3 (i still need a ps4 badly),
and my xbox one. so yeah...

Everything i own arcade related can be sold for the right price.
Even some of my cars and bikes. One thing i learned was to never fall in love with
a material item /s.
I watch alot of youtubers and stuff they horde , overbuy , beg for and it makes me
wonder if these people have a mental illness.

This, and yeah ive been catching up on my console stuff too.
Waitin for freddy krueger to come out for "dead by daylight" for the ps4 still.
checkin out steam games too.

I was one of those, at one time I had probably like 10 unfinished cabinets stored around places.
I actually don't like unfinished projects as I feel that it causes me "Stress" and less fun when I feel I need to finish things up to clear up room, where working on 1 project is fun and I can take my time with it.

however it seems when you start buying you find other great deals that are hard to pass by.
so I end up often getting a bunch of games when I start looking to restore only 1

I'm down to my last game to restore right now, but I still have another cabinet I bought from someone that I stlil have to pickup. (so that will be 2)

I do hoard PCBs tons of them, but have been clearing them out last few months

I give away or sell whatever I know I won't use just to make sure it stays in circulation and gets into hands of someone who can actually use it. I see it that keeping parts I won't use but won't sell is just as good as throwing them out.

This is one of the things that always baffles me..

Ive met people with say 12 DK PCBs and no actual DK machine who will not for any reason sell any of their pcbs.

What exactly is the appeal of having say 200 PCBs for machines you dont and or will never own?

Other then hoarding them hoping the prices get driven up so you can gouge someone in need later what would be the point?

Pretty sure these are lyrics to a Brittney Spears song.

tons of reasons:

1. pcb was sold at a very good/low price, buy them all!

2. you are learning or want to repair a game, so u collect 10-20 pcb's of the same
game to learn about them, the ic's, the cpu, the ram, the rom, the ttl stuff, etc...

3. some ic's are rare and expensive and the only way to acquire some of them is to
buy pcb's at a good low price that the seller might not be aware of.. some pcb's that
come to mind are the gorf/wizard of wor pcb with the votrax speech IC on it. worth
$20-30 or higher just for that impossible to get IC. :)

4. to have one or many backup pcb's for your rare game if it goes down.
