Arcade history paperwork will be for sale very soon!

Hello all,
As i showed a picture in a previous thread, http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=252120

I will be starting ebay auctions on this stuff right after Christmas. I know that many have contacted me wanting some of this, but there is a lot of monetary value here and i did not want to start selling stuff rwhen people were gearing up for Christmas. So soon as the holidays are over, the auctions will start. This stuff will take a long time to sell, it wont all be available at once (unless someone is willing to buy the whole lot) I dont want to sell it all at once for a few reasons. One is that i just can not go through it all at once, this will take more than 100 hours to go through itself. Second is a financial reason. Several will want considerable amounts and may not be able to buy it for cost reasons, so by doing this over time, it allows some to be able to afford more.

Im posting this early so that those interested can be prepared. If anyone does want it all at once, ill be more than glad to sell it. The last boxes i went through sold for over 6k, and that was 4 boxes, this is tons more than that, so if someone wants to then fine, ill sell it all for 10k right now. Those that are disappointed that it will be split up, group together and buy it now

I happened to be down by Troy a couple months ago and saw this stuff in person. More than 95% of the manuals are truly NOS. You know the sound when you open a book or magazine for the first time, the pages make a kind of cracking sound. That's what he has there. Plus a ton of hand drawn original schematics, etc. Tons of great stuff.

Other than the manuals and schematics/blue prints are there any internal company documents in the collection?

As an arcade historian I'd be very interested in things like design doucments, e-mail, project documentation etc.

Also, has there been any thought to digitzing any of this stuff and making the information available online.

I dont begrudge anybody's right to sell or buy it but I'd hate to see it just end up squirreled away in some drawer in a private collection, only to ultimatley end up the trash and lost forever.

If I bought anything, I'd copy what I needed, make it available, and try to find a place to donate the originals (a university library, the KLOV library, etc.) I don't know if the video game hall of fame/museum is even a going concern anymore but at one time they were looking to preserve this kind of material for posterity.

Is there any baby pacman stuff?
And is there any stuff from ms.pacman plus, super galaxian and possibly any other unusual games?

It probably won't happen, but I thought I'd mention it.
Another possibilty for preserving this stuff is to do a Kickstarter project to digitize it and put it online (I'd even contribute to a project that paid someone to simply donate this stuff to a museum).

Many of the originals could probably still be sold afterwards (especially pristine manuals, a number of which have already been digitzed).

It's probably way too much work but I thought I'd throw it out there.

This would be great.

Subbed for auctions... I would love to see the drawings for the Pac and Chomp Chomp cab.

Cool stuff!

My only question is on the value of this stuff.. Does the owner have the legal right to use blueprints/films/etc to reproduce cabinets, artwork, etc? As that would be valuable.. But as a pure historical perspective, and not having the legal right to use or reproduce anything sale able from the stuff.. Then the value might be quite less?

Just asking, cause well.. I haven't a clue :) And its pretty rad once of a lifetime materials that you've got.. Kinda like AtariScotts hoard.. But for Bally/Midway, my next fav to Williams..

I don't think so. He's got the paperwork, not the IP. That all stayed with the company. The documents are of historical interest and while you couldn't go into a high profile business, lots of folks make repro parts off of old films and as long as you don't represent yourself as the original company, you aren't likely to run into any trouble.

Nice, thanks for answering my question. Always wondered how people could use original films for producing reproductions without trade mark or other legal issues.

Something that i have never seen done and sure dont want a trend of it, but if the mods wouldnt care, id like to grab one of the folders, post pictures and do a auction here for only KLOV members. it could all be either through a post or pm's, i dont care, and just see what it does

Sounds good to me.

I like that idea. I think the material is more likely to be shared and preserved if someone on KLOV buys it.

For the stuff up to 8.5 x 14 (other than the manuals), if I didn't buy it, I'd be more than happy to scan it all in and share it then send it on the person who did at my own expense (the winning bidder would have to consent, however, since it could be seen as devaluing the items and would also delay their getting them, though I could probably do it pretty quickly).

The manuals would take too long to scan and given their pristine condition, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to do so.

If devaluing the stuff is a concern, I could also just transcribe the information (I'm actually primarily interested in the information in the documents rather than the documents themselves).

Yeah I just opened my burgertime manual for the first time this weekend. It was still stapled into the holder on the back door. I love doing that because it is like a little time capsule. Anyways, it was all stuck together from the ink on every page and left ink transfer. I could see how handling some stuff could affect value I guess. It is fun though to crack into something like that for the first time though. :)

Does this cover mostly early '80 era releases? I'm not versed into the association of Bally and Midway, But I know they released lots of pinball; but is there any late '80/mid '90 Midway stuff? (narc/smash tv/first mk) era?

Well, I have an update of this thread. It has all been sold. I have found a buyer for the entire lot that i have and they have sent a deposit tonight. The person did say that overtime they do intend to share some of the information with the world. I believe that most of it will be archived.

And just so that people know what this stuff is valued at, it was sold for the 10k that i wanted. I am not naming the buyer, it will be his choice to let people know who has it. But if he does release information and archive it, hopefully he does it like others and accept donations because now it is known how much he spent to make the purchase

Perhaps maybe some Wizard of Wor stuff might be in there. Not sure though, I think that game was entirely made under Dave Nutting's company and just licenced under Bally.
I would be interested in the WOW papers.

edit.... well there went that hope....
