Arcade Games with Sound or Music in Attract Mode

Wait a minute, just the HSS kits give you attract sounds? All of the Ninty ones?

Yeah. It's part of the kits. As you know, MB and Popeye already have attract mode. DK and DK Jr kits have attract mode as an option. You don't even need to buy the D2K Kit, you can just order just HS Kit part, but it's worth paying a little extra for the D2K feature IMO.

MB has attract sounds? Or just attract mode with video?

Sorry, I meant attract sounds, not mode. I haven't turned MB on since taking it apart months ago, but I thought it had attract sounds. Come to think of it, I don't think it does. Though Popeye does and yes, the intro music at the title screen is very annoying. When I had Popeye, I turned it off.

and Crazy Kong also.

Only Crazy Kong Part 2 (from Falcon, and one or two others that bootlegged it by removing the Falcon logo/name) All the other versions don't have the cage scene that has the sounds. Another one not mentioned is Gaplus/Galaga 3.

Once you have your Punch Out going, that will have attract music...

That really sucks. DKJR would be cool with attract mode sounds too. Wonder if I could isolate specific game sounds from those ambiance CD's, record them to loop cassettes, then install cassette players in all my games running off the 12V line. Wow, what a lot of work.

How do you stop it once you play? Have the coin land on top of the stop button... :)

Brilliant!! Maybe a Fitty Cent piece would work better as it is much heavier. Time to modify all my coin mechs. Man, can you imagine if Arcade games would have had Fitty cent Piece mechs? How sweet. I always liked the Fitty Cent piece, and the US Mint would been kept busy too.

A couple of people have emailed me asking if I could enable attract mode sounds for Williams' games, so I spent a few hours looking through Joust's code hoping I could find an attract mode check that could be NOPed out, but I came up empty. I still think there must be a way to do it. Some day I'll check again and see if I missed something.

Meh, just push the test switch on the sound boards... it's not a pretty sound, but it's a sound... gotta count for something.

I'll have to look for the Tempest dip switch to turn that on. DK if you have the D2K/HSS kit. Mappy. I think Spy Hunter but I haven't tried to enable it yet so I could be wrong.

You could also add Arcade Ambience mp3's to your game room set up. I'm planning to do that.

I have hours of surround sound recordings from Ground Kontrol if anyone wants to do something with them. I haven't had a chance.

How about ,

Asteroids Deluxe
MsPacman/Pacman

Those are definitely correct.

From what I can tell these don't have attract mode sound:
Mario Bros (needs the HS kit to enable)
Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man (been thinking about trying to do this hack.)
Robotron
Defender
Joust
Asteroids Deluxe
Omega Race
Centipede

Pretty much all the machines that I have and some boards that I have don't have attract mode sound, which is a bummer. I'm getting the HS kit for Mario so that it does.

I'm not sure about Galaga 88. . I'll check that tonight to see if there is a setting.

With the exception of the 1812 Overture in Robotron, the sounds in most Williams games would get really annoying quickly. Hearing the pteradactyl from Joust every few seconds would be bad. Trust me. When BFD was working on the Joust pin, he hooked that sound up to every event. After 20 minutes of that I slammed his office door so hard I broke the doorknob off and got a standing ovation from most of the other people on the floor.
