Looks like VF is going to do twitter updates through the machines for folks with linked accounts. I've seen this done a couple times in console games and it's gone somewhere between annoying and complete spam flood. I can understand the few manufacturers left trying to get an edge but I don't see this going well. People do well enough streaming endless stupid all over the place with twitter, they don't need a computer helping them to generate more tweets. And people ask why I haven't signed up for twitter yet.

they are on to a concept that I thought might actually help revitalize the arcade industry a bit. Although their idea is too limited. It's not really effective to just let your friends know that you are doing good in a game or whatever. The real key would be something that would let everyone in the arcade know who was the best at a game and when a new record was set. Or even better, everyone who plays at that arcade chain all over the world. When a new high score was posted. The basic idea would be to create competition by making the best player famous among the gamers at the arcade. Since we seem so obsessed with being known or famous these days I think it would make people want to compete to be the best. Kinda like we did back in the day but with cell phones and the net it's much easier to let everyone know who is the best of the best.

While it probably wouldn't bring things back on it's own, this would be a really good idea. Encouraging competition in a way that most other people in the arcade or playing that particular title would likely bring more money to the machines. Even without the fame aspect, part of the draw of games in a public space has always been the competition, either through high score tables on single player games or through the old "winner stays" rotation going on a head to head 2 player game. Something leveraging that in a more accessible way would bring in more traffic, though of course more would have to be brought to the table to really get more people in. That idea would keep them coming back though.

Kotaku shows just how much it DOESN'T pay attention to arcades again as Incredible Technologies in the US has offered both Facebook and Youtube updates in their games for the past couple of years. With Golden Tee 2010 as you could link it with Facebook you could also link it with Twitter. So the article is inaccurate.

I don't mind the Twitter updates though, with as many people that use Twitter I think it would be cool if more arcade games uses something like this or Facebook to post mini-updates, thus spreading the word to their friends.
