I'm looking for a few more arcade games that are far better than the console versions, or a good console version doesn't exist and/or there isn't a good mame version.

Donkey Kong and Gauntlet Legends are two.

What are some others? Thanks guys.

Ikari warriors, and all of it's related games, with the rotating joysticks.

Most driving games

The original Star Wars arcade game.

Xenophobe

Paperboy

Those off the top of my head. Any game that had special controllers is definitely better than the console version.

Almost any game pre-1990'ish really.

How about Pac-Man? The Atari 2600 version was pretty terrible. Too obvious?

Most ports of arcade games just don't match their arcade counterparts, in my opinion.

All games like Frogger, Galaga, Bubble Bobble, Turtles in Time, Pacman, ect, there has been an Xbox arcade version or equivalent that is just as good or better.

Well.. I can't cover them all. I'm no purist, But as being both a console and arcade gamer.. I'll tell you this. Almost all arcade games are better than there water-down console versions.

Remember that.

EDOT and Major Havoc are great examples of this, you can't emulate the effects of playing them.

there are some pretty good ports, but all of the mortal kombats IMO. Arcade was better hands down.

Well this is a rare time I can chime in and say with a bit of joy that the one game I own is one of those. :)

The PlayStation port, was frankly terrible as it didn't even have a true Tag Team, and the Dreamcast port, while much better than the PSX, still wasn't arcade perfect as it was missing some sounds and animation, as well as an increased loading time from being on a disc.

Now as far as games I don't own, most of the ones I am looking for can go on this list as well, as long as a unique driving game called Lucky N' Wild.

Everything but Super Mario Bros.

Even Vs. Super Mario Bros was better in the arcade. The weakness of the ports was what drove me to want real arcade games since the 80s. Ever since the NES the ports got better but they were ALWAYS lacking something.

From your sig I'm guessing you were talking about Xmen vs SF. Saturn version of X-men Vs. SF with the ram cart was arcade perfect.

My suggestion is KILLER INSTINCT. SNES version was well done for its time but the console just didn't have anything even remotely close to the arcade's power. The planned N64 release got scrapped in favor of KI Gold (port of KI2). I like KI1 better.

Most (all?) of the fighting games are better in the arcade.
Most of the shmups are better in the arcade - but not all.
Anything with a wheel or a gun is probably better in the arcade.
NFL Blitz is much better in the arcade than the consoles.

I personally find the NES versions of Contra, life force, and bubble bobble (maybe) to be better than / as good as the arcade - but they are different enough that you could own both.

cosmic chasm: much better than the vectrex version
tempest: 2600 tempest is pretty much unplayable
asteroids: horrible
missile command: 1 fire base on the home version.
sinistar : 2600 sinistar is horrible

Yes, I was speaking of X-Men vs. Street Fighter. I actually have no experience with the Saturn version of the game, as I have never even owned a Saturn. Still I have played the PlayStation port and it is indeed garbage compared to the Arcade board.

Good call on Killer Instinct! I too enjoy the original much better than Killer Instinct 2... not sure why, maybe the slightly darker feel of the game, and the anouncer has a better voice in my opinion. Not sure if it's the same voice actor or not but it just seems better in the first game.

xmen vs sf was better on saturn because it used a 4mb ram cartridge for zero loading times, other games use that too but almost all of them stayed in japan

I had a modchipped saturn back in the days and it was easy enough to find backups of those famous japanese 2d games along with a 3rd party 4mb cart(action replay)and I was really happy

I also agree ki 1 is better than 2
