I have a 9 in 1 multi (19 inch, upright, cedar grain) and a working but unrestored Elevator Action for trades. A dude wants to trade me a nice working DK cocktail for one of them. I was looking for a DK cabaret, but I actually first played the cocktail when I was 9, so that style has sentimental value to me. I was gonna restore a DK upright for myself, but that's a lotta work. This way, I'd get a DK, and get rid of another project/space waster. Plus I wouldn't have to restore another DK, freeing up time to finish a few other projects. Good trade? Or am I a fool for trading an upright for a DK cocktail? Do the DK cocktails really suck that bad? Or is it just cool to say that cuz that's the common attittude towards them? Help.

Don't get me wrong, I love DK and the cocktail version is interesting (though I've heard it's a pain to play on since the controls are set almost vertically), but I think trading Elevator Action wouldn't be a fair swap. If it's a solid Elevator Action cab, the dude would be getting a great deal. DK cocktails seem to be readily available whereas the Taito cabs are not. At least in this area. The 9-1 would be more of a fair trade IMO. Though, sentimental and nostalgic value are big for me. I say go for it either way if it means something to you.

Surprised to see you asking for advice. 20K posts and you can still fit your head through the door. That's a compliment sir.

I've seen you post about the joy of playing the cocktail games, as a youth. Because of that, you may want to go for it, if the one he's selling, is indeed nice. It's cool to hate em cause of the joystick set-up. To each their own. Heard it both ways.

You are underminding yourself, Phet, when you say "I was gonna restore a DK upright for myself, but that's a lotta work". C'mon, bro. We've all seen your work. Galaxian, Moon Patrol, MB WB. It'd be top-notch, when you finished it and you know it. (I'd insert the winky-face, but we know your true feelings about that).

Dear Clueless,
Who cares what we think. Follow your heart.

The best part is I'd follow my heart no matter what most of these schmuck-er-fellows would say, but it's fun getting people's input and opinions anyway. Maybe we'll even start a raging DK debate.

I thought you weren't that big a fan of DK? Color me confused. Why not trade for a different game that you like more?

Good. Because there are 2 ways to value a game, sentimental, and dollar value and sentimental value to me outweighs dollar value every time.

If you suck at DK, get the cocktail, because then it wouldn't matter what control it had, you'd still be horrible at it. If you're a world class player, get the upright. Personally I think the cocktails are cool.

Agreed. I've picked up a few high-dollar games that held no memories for me and usually I unload them within a year. The sentimental pick-ups tend to stay. Dave, you've played my heart strings and I dig the tune.

BINGO. You have to be good to notice how bad the controls are. I am not good. I just love the game and the sounds the game makes. Nevermind what Jow says, I love DK with a passion usually reserved for fat Cub Scouts and cedar bird houses.

Thanks,

I want to see pics of this ducktail...

Avoid the CT version like the plague. They look cool, but the cool factor quickly wears off.

Dear Clueless,

Take it from someone who has owned one, YES THEY SUCK THAT BAD. Unless you want to get carpel tunnel syndrome from playing so you can blame it on work and file for worker's comp. The angle of the CP makes it virtually unplayable. DON'T DO IT!!!

I had a chance to play the cocktail version a few months ago...the controls were a bit awkward but I still managed to play a pretty good game with it. I would much rather have the upright or cabaret version given the choice.

What is so bad about them? The control scheme? The small monitor? The large footprint? Personal bias?

Control panel - sucks
Small monitor - heh, sucky but not bad
Large footprint - no me importa
Personal bias - none

Metal cabinet - crappy as hell and not so very eye appealing
Place for drinks while playing - BONUS

Go upright or go home.

Thanks for the hard-nosed advice. Makes me sad though, as I really wanted to pick this up. Oh well. I'll buy or build a cabaret then.
