I have a Phoenix Arcade CPO that I want to apply to a wood Williams cp.
I routed a portion of the cp to put polycarbonate,so I could put the dust washers below the overlay.
The question is should I paint the cp before I apply the overlay?
Here is a pic of the cp.
Note I still need to bondo the bolt holes.

I would think you would want to either paint, seal or stain the wood section to give the cpo a better surface to adhere to.

That is what I was thinking but when I pulled the Stargate cpo off it was bare wood underneath.
I think I will prime and paint it.
I just don't know whether I should use black or a light color.
For those who have applied this cpo, does the color underneath affect the colors of the Multi cpo or is it thick enough to not matter?

The color underneath DOES matter, at least with the overlay I applied, which was from arcadeoverlays.com (which was a good quality overlay BTW)

I applied the overlay on wood (Defender control panel) that was primed, then painted black. I should have used a lighter color, as it definitely darkened some of the colors on the CPO.

Still, it's not too bad. Prime and paint with a light color and you should be good to go.
