eBay - 3rd Party APB complete seat

I filled and re-drilled the countersink holes from the Tee nuts over the last couple days — one of the tee nuts had dislodged from the wood and I really had to do a number to get the bolt out of it and remove those pieces. Also fixed some flaking with wood glue. I now need to hit the whole thing with some wood hardener, then bondo a gap on one of the vertical faces, then finally paint and install the new tee nuts and flange bolts.

I also received the rubber mat covering today. Man that stuff stinks. Going to need to set it outside for a few days to off gas. @brmorr, is there any padding or anything on the seat surface itself, or just the rubber mat right over the wood?

So that's it for the nails going through the front and backsides? Just 3 going into the blocking?
Also, and probably best answered by @brmorr , what are the measurements for where the ear pieces sit? Or are they just basically centered to the seat part.

For the attachments from the seat into the "ears" as you called them (I like that term)? Yeah, they were glued, and just 3 square-drive cabinet screws. The blocking that is holding the seat together has a bunch of staples attaching it to the plywood pieces.

Just the staples going in from the outside to the blocking ( all the others plus bolt holes are clear enough in the pictures) . Even though it doesn't matter much I'm just trying to copy it as close as I can .
Yup the three holes for the square head screws are already in place but where the ears sit on there is a mystery yet and doubtful yours will give an accurate placement measurement.

My sides are still currently off, but I can reattach one with the screws and get some pics and measurements. I believe it is just centered on the seat side but we will see.

Although my game w/ seat is in storage right now, I don't ever recall padding under the rubber laminate.

I know bitd even when these did have the seat attachments, albeit rarely... they were not very comfortable.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. Mine still had the rubber attached at the edges but I wasn't sure if there was a pad under the top surface. I played a sit down model a ton BITD but I, and my backside, were much younger and less sensitive to uncomfortable seating so I don't remember it being particularly uncomfortable then but who knows.

I owned an APB a long time back that I got a seat for(and sold of course). They never had padding under the rubber part of the seat. Even the one I played back in the day at the Holiday Inn, was just rubber as well.

IMG_9216.jpegGettin there. I'm painting the side ears (heavily) instead of using laminate . Should be quite bulletproof once cured and sanded. Might do a polyurethane coat on the the seat part.
Rubber mat on its way. Hope there's enough for Red Baron and a possible BZ step as well.
Probably be a while before I acquire the metal ( need day off to deal with the metal guys) Unless someone tosses out a home gym or something on my driving routes.

Here are some pics. Definitely centered longways, but side puck is higher up top by a little.

Also, if you are using the original 3 screws, I suggest just getting some new ones. For these pictures I had the one screw I attached break while tightening it. I'm going to get all new ones when I put this back together now.

Nice. I got my mat yesterday. It needs to off gas but it sure looks right. I decided I'm going to go the paint route on my ears too, as laminating both sides with the laminate I have on hand will make the piece too wide for the T-molding.

Got my seat Ear art from TOG today! Interestingly it is 1/16" shorter than the dimensions @brmorr posted on each axis. From some pictures of originals I found though it does look like there is a hairline border around the art, so I think this is correct.

Update for anyone trying to make the side ears. The radius of the corners is 1.5". I thought it was 1.375", but I 3D printed a corner radius guide for that measure and it didn't fit the profile of the original puck or the art I got from TOG. Tried a 1.5" radius guide and it fits dead on.

You can see in the pics below that I checked it against the TOG art as well as the remnants of my original ears and it matches up. I cut the blanks (10-1/2" x 3-1/2") on the table saw over the weekend (with a few spares) and now that I have a guide to mark the corner radius I'm going to trim them down. Unfortunately I don't have a router table, so I will probably have to do it with a jigsaw for the rough cut and then a belt sander to get it right.

Probably not ideal for this random 3rd party ad thread to turn into the APB seat restoration thread, but here we are…

Anyway, over the last few days I applied wood hardener to my seat, re-glued a bit of the blocking that was a little loose, painted it for additional sealing and reinstalled new stainless T-nuts with new flange bolts.

I also completely stripped the old finish and rust from the seat frame, and this morning in between gusts of wind I primed and painted it, using Rustoleum textured black. I didn't want to spend the money on powder coating since I already paid almost $200 for the seat itself, but this is a very nice finish and once it cures thoroughly I think it will be plenty protective. You can also see in the photos that I am laying the rubber mat out in the sun to try to accelerate the off gassing a little. Man it stinks.

Headed to Home Depot to buy a small router table so I can use my router to trim out the ears and slot them for T-mold. Barring any major issues I should be able to get this seat fully finished either this weekend or next!

Tomorrow will be recapping the monitor chassis but hopefully I can get the seat covering done as well.

Looking good. These are perfect replacements for the feet on the bottom of the frame as well

I saw this stupid thing come up in my eBay feed. But it was on the other side of the planet or I would have nabbed it. I think they said pickup only.

Yeah it was pickup only, on Long Island, which is basically the other side of the planet from everywhere except Long Island. It was about a 9 hour round trip for me, and I'm near Philly.

I'm loaded up on Ears now! I wanted a couple to experiment with using various paint or vinyl coverings, plus wanted at least one spare in case I screwed one up. They all came out good so now I have 6 to choose from!

On a very related note, where has a router table been all my life? I realized the old jigsaw-and-sander method to round the corners was going to be a boatload of work and frustration, and then I'd still need to slot the ears for molding. So I went and bought a small Ryobi bench-top router table at HD yesterday and affixed my Bosch router to it. That, along with the radius guide I 3D printed made quick and consistent work of the cut stock! I realized after cutting the blanks on the table saw they are 1/32" too wide, but I don't think anyone will get calipers out to check my work so whatever.

Now I need to sand and paint them. Might try covering one in black vinyl as the top coating rather than try to get paint perfect and see how that looks. I have enough to play around with now.

Anyone need a set of ears?? I expect to have at least 2 extras at this point.
