Anything new from JROK coming up?

Mcr

A multi-mcr board would be fantastic. There was another thread about one awhile back, but there hasn't been any updates recently.

Congrats James! You know you've made it when people are speculating what you'll be coming up with next, and committing to buy sight unseen. Forget the iPhone 8... give me an MCR FPGA! (seriously... my Kickman and Spy Hunter boards have minor glitches that are hard to track down and really annoying ;) ).

Send 'em to cdjump!

Heh, I probably should... it might save my sanity, but not my pride. ;) I've been collecting >15 years and have never sent a board out for repair. Tracking down and fixing problems is half the fun of collecting for me... though free time is always getting harder to come by, and MCR boardsets suck to work on since they're in a stack, and I haven't gotten around to building a JAMMA adapter to test them on the bench (so I'm stuck troubleshooting on the floor with the board halfway hanging out of the cabinet :p ).

I guess you could design all of the DAC elements from the monitor into the FPGA? But if you did then you probably couldn't use it with the original monitor.

Maybe the better way to handle it would be to have a totally separate monitor converter board, that way not only could you use it with an FPGA replacement but with original boards also, which would make saving games from the scrap heap a lot easier if you could for example throw a common Asteroids monitor in a Star Castle or Rip Off.

Again, easy for me to suggest as I have no idea how much work it would be to make that happen! :D

Thanks for all the inquiries !

I have a number of projects in progress right now, but I don't like to make public announcements before the hardware is running to a reasonable extent ( like fully playable, but maybe without the sound ). I'll put some vids up soon as I have something good to show.

There will be some updates to Namco custom ic replacements, and I'll actually building some more in the coming weeks.

In the meantime all the other boards are available either directly or from arcadeshop.

JROK's the man :)

For instance, I would love to see a replacement for the Namco Custom 27.

A Multi-MCR board would be awesome but the games have such unique controls (generally), that many games would be unplayable if all used on the same machine.

Wacko simply can only be played with proper controls. No other game would be playable in a wacko cab.

A discs of tron cab could play kozmik krooz'r also, but not vice-versa.

tron, solar fox, satans hollow would be a good 3 game kit for a tron stack.

I don't think enough of these boards are "unrepairable" or flaky (like williams boards) to warrant fully doing a 1 to 1 replacement.

edit: I'd love to see it happen though.

It would be good if those special controls were repopped at a reasonable price. Kozmik kroozr and discs of tron are kinda fun.

The mirrored toy in kozmik might be part of the allure though...

I agree the controls would be difficult for a multi game but these boards fail so much I would buy one and just have it boot to my Wizard of War, same thing with TRON.

This would be AWESOME!

Although still a few things would need to be addressed. I've found that playing a 2-way stick game pretty much works fine with either 4-way or an 8-way. But playing a 4-way game with 8-way stick is tricky. Although what's interesting is 2 of the Tron levels seem like designed as 4-way stick, strange....

I would guess maybe the added buttons for Satan's Hollow and Solar Fox could be mapped to the player 1 and 2 buttons?

....and if this was done in JROK fashion (JAMMA), then maybe add a 2in1 switcher to add Mad Planets ;)

The restrictor in the Tron stick makes it harder to hit the diagonals than a normal 8 way stick. That is why you tend to not accidentally hit the diagonals during light cycles.

Before I got a Tron stick for my MAME cabinet, I would hit diagonals quite a bit on the cycles. It looked really weird. Not sure if it is possible on a real Tron though.

All this Moon Patrol talk makes me wonder if that game shares hardware with enough games to make it worth doing a multi. Either FPGA or native hardware. What other games run on similar hardware?

Not only are the controls mostly unique (Spy Hunter being another) but the boards are easily repairable by CDJump and others and my Spy Hunter boards have been among the most reliable boards I've had for 10 years now.

And many of the MCR games have boardsets available for purchase with a little patience.

I could see a some value in a drop-in board in some situations I guess.
