Anyone want to swing on over and do some Cap Kits in MI?

As much as I would like to send these out, I really hate discharging monitors. If it really comes down to it, I probably will. But the one board I did send out, I wasn't happy with the results and it needs to be fixed again. So, anyone in Michigan willing to come here and fix a few games? I'll pay for gas, time and parts of course. I figure this is a good way to get some hands on knowledge on how to do these myself as well.

If I lived close by, I'd be glad to help you out.

The monitor is no big deal. Sure the discharge part is scary. High voltage pops are always a little nerve racking. I use a high voltage lineman's glove (rubber) and a screwdriver with an short jumper wire with alligator clips at each end. One goes on the screwdriver shaft, the other on the monitor ground wire. With the glove on, there is no way the monitor can shock you.

Same here, if you were closer I'd help you out in a second.....

With a lineman's gloves on, I pull the anode out without even using a screwdriver! :)

Well, I have a footlong screwdriver coated in liquid rubber with a wire wrapped around it with a clip. Discharging does freak me out, but some of the boards look like they could be a bitch to pull out as well. Then you factor in trying to remember how to hook them back up once you get them back. Ugh. I know, no confidence Right? My big weakness is soldering. I just really suck at soldering. I can't learn things off the internet or youtube. I'm one of those people that have to see it done in person to learn it.

Yeah it sure takes the fear out of it.

When I was about 15 or 16, I used to fix tube TVs. One day I got a little careless adjusting the convergence or purity rings on the tube. I used to just reach back and move the rings while looking at the picture from the side. Well, I missed the rings and put my fingers on the coils and it stuck me there. It didn't let go until it had burnt enough of the skin off my fingers so that I wasn't conducting electricity very well. A painful lesson to be sure. It made me a lot more cautious. Not to mention the smell of your own flesh cooking is something you won't soon forget.

I started using the kind of gloves you wear for washing dishes. They worked pretty well. Much later I finally broke down and bought a pair of heavy rubber lineman's gloves.

I always take the monitor completely out (unless its one of the ones that are designed to make it easy to remove the board.) then set it on a bench or table, discharge the monitor (twice), then pull the board. If you have problems remembering where the wires go, take detailed pictures or make a diagram. Then reassembly is a snap.

Soldering is fairly simple. Is all a matter of cleanliness, flux, good solder, and heat. The best way to learn is to practice over and over on junk electronics until you feel comfortable with it.

I have a soldering kit I bought for my son for us to put together. I was going to do it this weekend, but got busy with other things. I figure this will be a nice way to practice with soldering. So just what are these lineman gloves? I also used the rubber dishwashing gloves. Hell, I think I just need to go to a bondage shop and pick up one of those latex body suits. Maybe then I'll feel safe.

I think I bought mine from Grainger. They are just heavy rubber gloves that have long cuffs. A lineman would wear a heavy leather glove over them to protect the rubber from cuts. I'm not planning on getting any cuts on mine, so I go without the leather glove. Its not really necessary, but its nice to know you are protected.

you're only about an hr from me (I'm up in Traverse City) too bad I just started in the hobby and don't know jack about monitors :p lol I do know that I probably need a new one though lol. I'd love to get together sometime and talk shop though!

Where exactly are you located? Maybe we could get a shin dig down here together and cap some monitors.

I'm up in Lake City, 15 miles east of Cadillac. Nice little quiet town, just like the one I grew up in. I was down your way this Saturday to pick up an awesome Capcom Cabinet in Shelby Twp. There are two guys over in Manistee that do repairs but I would have to pull the boards and take them there, which is not what i want to do. Prefer someone to come by here. Of course my big problem is, I dont have the right tools. Need to pick me up a better soldering iron and a Desoldering tool, which I'm actually looking into. I know if I watched someone do this in person, I would have more confidence in doing it myself.

Sounds like a plan. Just let me get all my games working 100% first. lol. Would probably have to wait til next summer. Starting to get cold around here, and lots of projects to do before the snow falls including trying to get my games recapped. I have 6 that need recapped, FWIW.

My family has a house in Lake City. I am up there a few times a year.

PM me and the next time I'm up I'll help you out. I think in mid Nov for hunting I will be up before the 13th or so.

Mark..

Hopefully I can talk Spirit here into coming on over and helping me out. :D Or maybe take Des's advice and throw a Monitor Capping Party. lol.

My family also has a place in lake city, I wish i could help you, but i leave the electronics in the monitors up to the experts.

Thats the trouble with living up North, not as crowded as farther down south. Thats a good thing, I love my peace and quiet, but not when you are looking for someone to help ya out. :D
