Anyone want to rent a BK490 Rejuvenator for a week?

Guys,

I just had this idea, and I have no idea if it's appealing to anyone but here goes.

For those of you who want to use a rejuvenator but can't justify the $150 to $??? to buy one....

I will rent you a fully working BK 490 rejuvenator with all the adapters you might need for $50 for one week (plus actual shipping). You can rejuv / balance all the monitors you've got in that time period.

It will come with a simple one page instruction sheet, which tells you all you need to know to operate it. It also comes with a book where you look up your monitor tube and figure out which adapter to use.

You can also call / text / email me (if you rent it) and I'll answer questions or talk you through it.

It won't fix every tube, but it does work wonders on most. If you have a dim picture, this baby will take care of it. If you are missing a color, this baby will often take care of it.

PM me if you're interested and we'll hash out the details. If I end up getting any kind of positive response to this, I'll work out a system and publish exactly how this will work.

It's a good plan for people who only have a dozen games and don't want to find the right adapters.

Good call on offering it, John.

Sort of a novel idea, but if I may play a little Devil's Advocate here...

Shipping is going to be the killer. Having sent a number of these across the nation, I know firsthand it costs about $20-25 each way shipped and insured. Doubling the cost, and then you might as well just buy one.

Plus personally I'd never let my 490B (w/CC-12) out of my sight, but more power to you.

True. But I have a bit of a shipping advantage over you in that I'm in the center of the country and you're on one coast. So my worst case is better than your worst case.

Second, I was planning (if enough interest) to use Crazy Climber's idea. That way, each renter will only pay for one shipping leg.

And your reasoning that if shipping doubled the cost they might as well buy one would be shared by many people. But there are others who may think differently - who don't really want the hassle of waiting and watching ebay and trying to snipe one (which is about the only way to get one cheap). And then dealing with what if they buy it and it doesn't work? or what if it doesn't have one or more of the adapters they need? Then they have to hunt adapters down (which isn't cheap or easy for some of the obscure adapters).

Plus some people don't really want to own one. They just want to use it and move it along.

....or at least I hope!.....

But thanks, you make very good points. This is just an experiment after all. I've been buying 490s whenever I can for no coherent reason and this is a way to help me justify my compulsive obsession.

Any plans on being up in the Naperville/Chicago area? I would do this in a heartbeat if it wasn't for the shipping costs.

Prepare heartbeat....I will be in Chicago soon. Haven't nailed down the date, but within the next two weeks I'm coming. So let's find a way to make the exchange....

But by the way, shipping from me to chicago isn't exactly a lot....

Thanks,
John

Sweet! This will work with a medium res monitor, right? Would it harm anything to do it across all of my vids, even the ones I would consider looking fine already?

I would probably clean and balance first...it's a less 'destructive' method with great results.

If you have a real bad tube (missing or real washed out colors) hit it with the rejuv. I've heard you can wreck a tube but I haven't done that yet. I had a 4600 that took well over a minute a couple times on the blue gun and still live. Picture looks amazing compared to what it did

This would be a cool way to help people out with rejuvenating crt's. The only thing that would scare me is if someone decides to keep it or even just gets lazy about sending it to the next person.

It will work on any tube - any res. (provided I have the right adapter for it).

What I would do is hook it up to each of your monitors and first just test them. This thing will tell you exactly where your tube is at. If no problem is found, certainly don't rejuv it. And if a minor problem is found, I agree with MonsterBash...just do a "Clean/Balance" on it. The instruction sheet covers all this. It will tell you when to rejuv and when to balance, and when to do nothing.

I'm actually in Minnesota, the center of the nation as well ;) Cheapest one I sent was to Chicago (doesn't get much closer), and it was $18.

What the heck does that mean. ... Are there different kinds or something?

There most certainly is. The 490B was the last CRT rejuvenator that B&K produced, making them into 2007. However, they changed the adapter standard away from the Molex they had been using for decades and went with a DB9 connection. What most people don't know is that the 490B had an optional cable attachment that converted the old standard to the new, allowing you to use your existing Molex adapter collections - the CC-12 cable.

Ah, I was tricked by your "Location" being MA.

Shipping prices have really gone through the roof. I suppose it's obvious why.

I've heard you can wreck a tube but I haven't done that yet.

While this is true......it's pretty difficult to do. I've probably done or had done....in excess of 100 tubes. I've only lost one......and it was so far gone to begin with.....I would have been shocked if I didn't kill it!:D
