Has anyone tried this HVLP spray gun alternative:

http://www.preval.com/

Looks like it may be a bit tedious to use for large areas (i.e. a full cabinet), but I am seriously considering it as an alternative to either renting or buying a HVLP set-up...or trying to roller-paint a cabinet. It has gotten some serious good reviews (you can check them out at amazon)

I know at least 1 Gatorguy has used it. Maybe he can add more of his thoughts...

have tried it. Works great for small things. Can't imagine doing a whole cab with it. Would take forever. Not sure off hand how much propellant is in there. It might be equivalent to a rattle can. So you may have to replace the propellant many times just to get a single coat on a cab. Great for touch up and small stuff like painting a cp.

You can get an HVLP gun for $30 that will do a fine job painting a cabinet, especially if spraying oil based paint thinned with acetone. Latex is a bit heavier, and a $30 gun likely won't have the optimal tip and needle. I recommend finding a good, used compressor. Using a spray gun is far from the only reason to have a compressor - nail guns, staplers, brad nailers, airing up tires, etc...

Yeah, it is not the $30 gun it is the giant compressor. I have a small 6Gal pancake compressor for the other uses. It seems crazy to drop the $$ for a big compressor (as well as the space). I guess I can rent or borrow one...

I've also considered going the laminate route.

You can come across some great deals on used on Craigslist. I've come to realize that buying used on larger tools often makes sense..find something gently used and get for much cheaper, and it works the same. However...I bought a used compressor on Craigslist and it ended up having issues. I had to get a compression rebuilt kit which was about $25. The oil-less compressors are nice, but they are loud and the compression ring and cylinder/sleeve can wear out. Still, I came out $150 ahead buying used and it's rebuilt like new now.
