Anyone turned a racing cabinet into an emulation racing cabinet?

If you are going to be using a PC to drive this rig then you can create a custom 4:3 resolution which will sit in the middle of your screen, this allows you to go 'full screen' with your games and have them be restricted to that 4:3 area.

I did this on a quirky MAME cab that I built using a 52" TV on it's side and masking off the areas that don't show the play area, rotating the windows desktop and creating a custom 4:3 resolution.

I'm going to be playing both 4:3 and 16:9 games.

Welp my boards are ready and he should be shipping them next week. He said it should take about a week or little more to make it over here from Europe. These are bigger than I thought based on the other pics. The JAMMA edge and SSD give it some perspective on the size.

Oh and I built 2 identical PC's about a month ago and have them all setup, ready to get those SSD's plugged in.

I also wrapped up the LCD conversions 2 weeks ago.

Once these other boards get here, I'm excited to get it all hooked up and hopefully things go smoothly.

Make sure you get some stock games played before you install it so you can do a fair comparison (or better yet, do one at a time for a side by side!).

Super excited for ya'! Hopefully there's not too much finagling to get it going and you can soon be be cruising the USA, the World, Off Road, the streets of Tokyo..... 😉

Yeah I plan on doing one at a time, so maybe I can do a Rush 2049 comparison between emulation and the real thing, side by side.

The boards were shipped yesterday and he said it usually takes about a week to get here. And he told me the SSD's have PDFs on them with English instructions specific to the game specific boards you have, so there should be a Rush 2049 English version for me to check out.

I will snap a bunch of pics of everything too once I do it for my own sake since I have to do it twice, but I'll also post em in here.

Did you say how much those boards/SSD's cost you? Thanks!
It ended up being around $775 total (including shipping - which was $100 itself) for 2 sets.

It was 565 Euro for the boards and 2 SSDs, and then 83 Euro for shipping.

The shipping went up 33 Euro from 2 months ago he said.

EDIT:

Here is the exact prices he quoted me from our chat

Uffb : 115€
Pwm2happ: 75€
Sf addon : 20€
1 ssd single mode : 95€
2 ssd link mode : 145€

I got 2 Uffb, 2 Pwm2happ, 2 Sf addon, and the 2 ssd link mode.

And the SF addon is specific to my cabinet. They make those to order but I believe they are $20. I am pretty sure I was the first Rush 2049 one they had ever made, but I know they already have the plans for many racing cabinets already.

Well my tracking hasn't updated in 3 days saying it's ready to depart France, and I googled and turns out that this la poste courier company sometimes can take like a month and have things just hanging in limbo for weeks.

I hope it shows some movement over the next few days cause I'm anxious as hell to get this all hooked up.

EDIT:

And of course I spoke too soon. It appears to be in the USA, I think, based on the tracking. It's kind of hard to tell with the translated wording lol.

The fates are taunting me as I keep stumbling onto your various posts on this project.
Stoked on your progress.

Looking forward to you eventually revealing from whom you purchased these things!

Well I have taken the leap and sent Seb some digital euro-dough.
I was stunned for him to say I could expect to see my stuff shipped- next month?!
They obviously had at least one more set of boards in hand (courtesy of Drew's efforts on all our behalves) so they may just need to populate things and send them off.
It will be interesting to see if my order was made too soon for them to be able to implement all of the corrections you have engineered with them @purbeast

Seems like the only difference between what you have accomplished and my plan is me retaining the CRTs in the cabinets.
Not sure how that may or may not confound the effort.
I do have a few multisync chassis here so that may be part of the solution to a broader range of games being playable.

Looking forward to getting to it!

One issue if you try to keep the monitors, is that you won't be able to play any modern stuff, so keep that in mind. You'll have to get a video card that allows medium res as well, which I did in a few cabinets with crt-emudrivers.

I'll shoot Aganayte a message tomorrow to see if he wants my suggestions on the Rush addon board to add to yours. It would definitely make it cleaner than mine.

I'll have to poke my head in those cabinets again to see what monitors are in them and re-familiarize myself with all the guts.
I have a few mame boxes and they all are running cards flashed with Calamity's emudriver so I'm familiar with it but I haven't asked the guys in France if using a card similarly along with their stuff will work.

The CRT's should be NT 2701 or 2702 monitors I believe, which are medium res.

I don't see why it wouldn't work, from a hardware perspective. The more I've dug into it, it's really just a slightly modified version of this:

It even uses the Back Force Feeder software that is in the same repo, and that is how the actual games FFB stuff is primarily working.

Like it is possible to do all of this without the UFFB, it would just require A LOT of rewiring and stuff, and then hooking up an arduino and the other hardware, so the UFFB with all of the add ons just make it a lot more streamlined for us.

If I do recall however, the Hyperspin setup on there, that Seb mentioned it's all setup for 1080p mode. So if you stick to a CRT with medium resoultion, you may have to just reconfigure some stuff with Hyperspin and possibly the emulators.

I haven't looked into it yet, but all of my modern 16:9 games are running in full screen for me so they are 16:10 and stretched vertically ever so slightly. I do want to try and look into where I can fix this. To be honest though, Seb has not been very helpful after the fact with the software side of things. The other guy has been super helpful when I had hardware questions/problems though.

I know for sure that the monitor chassis aren't originals.
Sharp Image 727s in them now maybe I think?

If necessary they may wind up with multisyncs if it makes what I want to see happen work but I really need to have a look at what the game list I want most is anyway.

I've never used Hyperspin before (or any other FE except the default in mame for that matter) so this whole thing will be a learning experience in regard to emulators within a front end as it is.

Are those drives they sent you just loaded with the FE and games or was it built as a primary drive with Win10 on it already?

I have a few old PCs laying around already but not sure they will be up to the task in regard to processor speed for much either. They may only be i3s.

The drives are Windows 10 installed and also have all the games and front end setup. If you want a full list of the games on there I should be able to get that for you pretty easily.

This is the minimum pc requirement that Seb told me when I asked about it.

I5 gen 8 or more
8go ram or more
Nvidia only
Gtx 960 or more

My "need more info" before oulling the trigger is a:
1. A compiled list of compatible games
2. Which games require a 16:9 vs. CRT
3. Which games ae linkable
4. Which games allow saving high scores

Like Pixar Cars was originally released on CRT, so I wonder if that works still with this set up. Mario Cart as well I do believe. Initial D has numerous versions, but I think that game is big on saving a user profile (so is Rush 2049).

I could probably get by without modern games, but honestly I haven't played any (including Initial D), so I wouldn't know what I was missing. Although I hadn't played Rush 2049 before I got it either..

Thanks for doing this thread!

I will be more than happy to get any racers up to/including Rush2049 running myself.
That will keep me busier than I can manage until I can't drive any longer.
Hell, if I can even just get a handful of what originally ran on CRTs going I'll be stoked.
I'm interested to see how this all handles gear change differences from game to game.
There were a bunch of seemingly incompatible ways that games handled shifters.
