Anyone think Google Pac-Man will get more people interested in the hobby?

Maybe??? Weigh in.

You never know, considering the search engine tool is directly connected to it which would allow you to look up classic arcade games. It might get people thinking about it, but I've met few people in my life who actually take the initiative to go the next step. Kind of a "flash in the pan" deal.. "hey, that would be cool! I wonder if you can get one of the old home games!" [immediately distracted] "hey! check out that car!" [arcade idea fades to black...]

+1! I think people will think oh, that's neat, play it for 15 second and move on. I did and I'm already "in" the hobby.
+2

The average person who sees it will say:

"Neat, I remember that!" (30+) OR
"That old game is so lame!" (25-)

And then continue with daily life, forgetting they ever saw it. But it's still cool that Google posted it.

I agree with the above posts. I mean think about it, even if someone gets a flash of inspiration to look into getting one, one they see most of the retail prices on ebay they will lose interest. This is if they aren't discouraged by some of the retail website prices. I know this because of two people that came to me after I talked about it, they were interested then did their own search and lost interest. I told them I could find games for them cheaper but I they had already made up their mind after seeing $1000+ for classic games.
One of the reasons I have been able to persist in this hobby is because I know where to get the games for cheaper than those.

I disagree.
I think that a few people out there will see this and maybe want to search for more games, etc. and realize that you can actually purchase one for not THAT much money.
That's how I got into it when I stumbled on a game locally on E-bay years ago. I mean, we all had no games at some point and then the madness began with one moment, right?

It has generated a lot of interest in people i know who aren't in the hobby to e-mail me telling me to check it out, since they know I like arcade stuff.

I think google's pac-man will not cause a tremendous interest in classics. However, once the new Tron movies hits the theaters, we will see more in the hobby. If the movie is a huge success, even more will sign up to this hobby.

I agree whole-heartedly with Scramble. IMO it's all a numbers game. Millions will see the pac screen today but only a small number of people will give a rats crap about it. Undoubtedly there will be a tiny percentage of those people who start thinking about vintage games and an even smaller subgroup may search online for old cabinets. Therefore while I do think the screen may lead a few people to the hobby, it's certainly not going to make any discernable difference to us. On the bright side though even if only one or two people nationwide become interested and start collecting that's two more people making the space to save vintage cabinets :).

It will most likely generate more interest --- in MAME. People will think, "What other classic games from my youth can I play on the computer?" Then they'll find some flash games, eventually discover MAME, start scouring craigslist, then eventually turn a Tron or Tempest into a hellcade MAME....

actually, i rescind my old statement. it'll probably make them say, hey, can i get this downloaded on the wii or x box live.

I just saw then talking about Pac Man and the fact that Google put it out there on the evening news with Diane Sawyer. I think that means that it is definitely generating interest. If anything it may make the games more desirable/valuable. But no way of really knowing how big of an impact it will have. It is still very cool to see it and a lot of the classics getting attention lately- king of kongs, taco bell kids meals, google, etc.

No. If I can't play the game more than 10 seconds.. even being a collector.

But It was a neat little thing (typical pac-man) they put together.
