Anyone seen the King of Kong movie?

Yeah, everything Billy Mitchell says and does in that movie is CGed to make him look bad. Not many people know that. It's all movie trickery and the like.

I've watched this movie several times and I love it. The movie played an enormous part of me getting back into this hobby too. Without watching it, I don't think I would be on this forum, or running out to buy a Galaga machine in another state.

It also introduced and continues to introduce different generations of people to original arcade games. That is important. The hunt for the Donkey Kong score is now red hot compared to most old games. Brian Kuh is now 13th place in the list compared to being in 2nd or 3rd place when the movie premiered.

I now practice classic games trying to get to a better score. at the very least it has helped bring excitement the arcade industry. Every time one of these threads pop up, opinions fly. I suppose that is a good thing. :)

I echo Atlas100. I have always wanted an arcade game of my own, but I made it happen the same year I watched King of Kong. Not a coincidence.

+1

That movie surely ramped things up for me. Till then I was a closet arcade game lover. Now I'm out of the closet, and into the garage, shop, basement, office, kitchen..... *snort*

I've collected games for 15 years, but until I saw the movie I was never really that excited about beating my high score (or any actual records). Now I see by sharing strategies on here, I've been able to get some super scores. So the movie was misrepresentations of everyone in it. It was still fun to watch.

It made me NOT want to try and break any WRs.....

what is chasing ghosts?

and where can I get a copy of the dvd?

thanks

I have not yet seen chasing ghosts. It's a docementary about the "1983 Life Magazine" photo .

King of Kong is entertaining to say the least.

If I was nearing 1,000,000 points on DK, and had to choose between loosing it and my kid shitting his pants, Id take the score and change his pants like he has a thousand times before.

No, he would LOSE it. "Loosing it" would be the kid shitting his pants option.

So, because I have old-fashioned parenting values and am proud of it, you consider me to be patting myself on the back? Amazing...

You are pretty judgemental for someone who doesn't have their own life on a documentary for all to see.

Again, it's NOT a documentary. All of the people are hired actors reading from scripts. Billy Mitchell is CGed into the movie. He wasn't even there. He was in Detroit when it went down. And when Billy says "There's certain people I don't wanna spend too much time with", that's William Shatner dubbed in! I'm telling you, it's all film trickery and smoke and mirrors. You can't believe everything that is filmed and then replayed for you. The filmakers get in there and like, do a bunch of editing and stuff to make it look real but it's totally fake.

Congratulations on reaching the humor kill screen!

It's one thing to have values. It's another to be self righteous about it. Take a guess which one I was commenting on.

What did you find good about Chasing Ghosts? I think it tried to make most of the people profiled look like weirdos.

well it is a movie about arcade games and people that still have a passion about them. I don't think they had to try very hard to make some of the people look like weirdos. i mean come on who has 200 spiders in their house? and who has thousands of dollars worth of erotic art and spends hours upon hours watching people play arcade games going for records? of course some of them are weird, who cares. There are some pretty normal people in the movie also, you just remember the crazy stuff. that's why it's in there. the people who put that movie together spent a lot of time with all these people and had to pick out what they found interesting. I'm sure they had hundreds of hours of footage and the film could have been edited in many ways. I enjoyed the end product but just like everything else it's not for everyone.
