Anyone Remember the id Games "Demo" CD from ~1996

I remember in high school that a friend of mine had a CD that had demos of a bunch of id games including the newly released Quake. However, the games could actually be unlocked by purchasing a license over the phone (I think). You could then enter a code which would allow you to install the full versions of any of the games on the CD which included Heretic, Hexen and a few other games I can't remember.
There was a crack floating around that would generate a key to unlock the games which allowed you to get all those games for something like $5 that it cost for the CD.

That was awesome.

Holy crap I remember that! I wonder what happened to mine?

I remember going to the dollar store and getting "shareware" hahaha... shareware. like old school Open Source.

I played Wolfenstein 3D all the time... at least as much as the shareware version would allow

At one point I wanted to network "Doom" and I think it was version 1.0 that you could do multiple monitors for it by networking multiple pcs. Never did get it to work.

In the end though, I did network Doom as a multiplayer, and since then, moved on to be a Network Administrator, thanks to Doom :)

Heh, I was just thinking about this as well. I've got a few old pcs around here and wanted to do a 3 monitor Doom setup. After football season...

Oh man if you do post some pics! Such a Doom fan I guess when I was 6 I didn't know these things were possible!

I still have that disc, it's next to the computer in the cabinet of PC games :D I don't think I ever did get the crack though, that was a few years before I really figured out how to make that kind of thing work. I remember being super excited, because supposedly Quake required a Pentium CPU to run, yet it ran fine on my 486. You had to shrink the window a bit, but it still ran fine.

Quake ran 'okay' on my 486 at the time, but the install was about 80MB from what I remember and my entire drive was only 120MB...so I had to do some serious cleaning before I could get it to play. And then I had to do some console commands to crank the settings way down for it to run even close to smooth.

As for DOOM, my cousin and I used to use a serial cable to link our two computers to play. He always kicked my ass though :p I was more into Wolf3D than I was DOOM.

WEAK.

I had a 320MB hard drive, no space issues at all! :D

I remember buying my first upgrade hard drive. A 480MB Maxtor. Cost me $189. I think the one I had before that was 32MB or something. Came on an old Packard Bell x486 25mHz computer I 'stole' for $125 from a outlet store that my friend's girlfriend worked at, and told us about.

Fellow Doomhead here. I am suddenly wanting to network some old PCs as well...

What the hell is wrong with us?!?!?! :D

I have doom and duke on xbox live. I know doom 2 is on there. is wolf??

I was the same way, Quake was an awesome game. Q1 and Q2 were bad ass. The rail gun from Q2 was always my fav.

Steam does that same sale all the time. I'd expect it during the Xmas sale, if not sooner.

thats what im hoping for, I was gonna buy it last time but my video card shit out, luckily I have a whole new beast of a computer :)

BTW, the xbox live version of wolf3d does NOT have online multiplayer (not even local, I don't think). If it did, I would have bought it years ago. In other words, it's basically a straight port.
