During my usual weekly stops at the Goodwill and Thrift stores this week, I made a rather odd find, a brand new factory sealed copy of Berserk for Atari 2600. Now I typically pass on anything pre NES, but given that this was only 3 dollars, I picked it up as a conversation piece if nothing else.

Now how, or why, a copy of Berserk for 2600 would appear on it's own, and go 30 years without being opened is beyond me, but is it worth anything? I know I've read that around the time of the market crash in '83, a lot of retailers were practically giving 2600 games away for free, and I know I remember as a kid there were still some stores that had leftover inventory that they were trying to get rid of, and this would have been as late as 1994.

I doubt it's worth much at all given the fact that Atari 2600 isn't popular amongst a lot of collectors, and the fact that so much of the stuff for the console is dirt common and cheap, but still an interesting conversation piece if nothing else.

From what Atari Age says, it's common- but I personally think any old game cart new in box is pretty cool.

Great find, but there are still tons of them around. You're right, it's not worth much. About $1-3, maybe as much as $5 to someone who's brand new to the scene. Berzerk is one of the most likely games to find unopened along with Asteroids, Defender, Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Missile Command, and a handful of others.

I collected these back in the day, too. Good times. :)

Actually, the ones you'll find the most of that are still sealed are the maroon and silver box 2600 titles. Any of the colored boxes (green, yellow, blue, etc.) aren't all that common to find sealed in the wild.

Still, Berzerk sealed isn't worth much more than you paid for it.

Still cool, tho. And, to tie-in to the other 2600 thread I'm in here - Berzerk is a pretty good 2600 port! ;)

I have 3 6 pack cases of unopened Asteroids, a 6 case pack of Sneek & Peek, and various other sealed 2600 and up games.
There was a company in Kansas that bought 5,000,000 sealed 2600/7800/Jaguar games in about 1992 and originally sold most of them for about 80 cents, then $2, then $5 plus shipping. They are now finally sold out. I bought about 30 or so games when they were cheap.

I am only knowledgeable in the fact that if you use the Sega Genesis 6 button controller, you can own any game you play. Especially if you play a multiplayer game and the other guy has to use the 2600 joystick.

Which reminds me, the fact that I rolled the counter on Asteroids was done with the Genesis controller, does this mean it doesn't count? xD
