Anyone know this scam artist?

Completely different MO and subject and far more believable in my case.

They had detailed knowledge of arcade stuff. The name is the same though so it may very well be the same folks.

Good search-fu on your part!

Yep.

But as is typical for me, given the expense of my surely flushed-down-the-drain first purchase, it'd just have been cheaper to have bought a new one. :)

If you get your $ back from paypal (or even if you don't), let me know. I am pretty sure I have one.

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure I won't get my $$$ back but filed the paypal dispute yesterday. I think the guy has about 9 days to respond and I'm sure he won't so I won't hear anything until at least then.

I'll definitely keep folks updated in this thread.

On a different subject, if the scammer that bit 3 or 4 of us here really is the same one in that other thread then everyone here at KLOV needs to be on their guard because these guys are able to talk the talk very convincingly.

I'd recommend that everyone be on their guard for items for sale by posters with low post counts and/or short histories here.

Looks like he grabbed a total of $450 from KLOV members. It sure sounds like no one is going to get their stuff. His posts were from 11/29 to 12/9. I would ask the Mod's for the guys IP address so you could attempt to follow up with the proper authorities. The guy probably forum hops, ripping people off.

On other forums, I've had people ship first and I've done 1/2 up front and 1/2 when it arrives.

Of course, everyone knows where to find me though. I'm on a LOT of forums and do a lot of business on them.

Unbelievable - "Buyer beware" for newer members still holds true. Hope this creep gets caught. I had one ebay deal go sour but I recovered my money by reporting mail fraud to the USPS. This was before paypal came on the scene and I mailed my payment. They must be very good at intimidation and prosecution as I tried the BBB and state's attorney first with little results.

It's reasons like this that I feel newly registered members with no posts should be willing to ship first if they wish to sell anything. It would prevent scams by people who register with the sole purpose of scamming someone.

Maybe we should have a sticky or something stating this. I know Neo-Geo forums has this. Of course if I was a newly registered member willing to ship first I would only do so to an established member with a positive buy history and people willing to vouch for them. Scamming works both ways after all.

It does work both ways.

On the Neo-Geo forums, I had a n00b ship first. On the vintage-computer.com forums I asked a guy to ship with 1/2 payment then the other 1/2 upon receipt. Both transactions went fine.

If a n00b doesn't want to do this with an established member then something is fishy. After the n00b shows they are trustworthy then there's no problem with them selling on the neo-geo forums and this place should act close to the same.

I'm betting fraud with Paypal is seen as wire fraud if you go to the right government agency. Also, if he is in a different state than the people he is defrauding, that would likely tack on charges. Would the right agency be the FBI? I'm thinking so because it is also a crime committed over the Internet. If one of you guys is mad enough, call your local field office or do some searching on their website to see if you can report it. A one-off theft wouldn't be such a big deal, but if the guy is getting $450 or more per forum, that's worth their time.

Can you tell if shoutathedvl is also the same person? He also scammed some folks as mentioned in the link below and said he was from Arkansas. Their is a nice tie-in on the Playchoice side art pricing too.

Edit:

Looks like it is the same guy... Under this alias he was trying to sell a cabinet in central Arkansas. Also, he mentions having a Tron, and working on a Demolition Derby project. In the jmiller scams he sells a Demo derby board that he tested in his Tron. He was asking for repair help under this alias too. He again is pushing the ArcadeVGA. Also, I found him trying to sell the ArcadeVGA over on the MAMEWorld forums. He used the same email address as he used here for one of the aliases. [email protected]

Here is his posting activity under shoutathedvl. Edit:Fixed Link

If you don't absolutely need the ArcadeVGA v2 and have an AGP Port you can make an AVGA. I picked up a Radeon 9200SE for like $8 at a local used PC shop and flashed it with the AVGA bios.

I did have to dick with it a few times in the ATI Bios editor and ended up doing about 4 flashes to the video card bios before I got it right but it works a treat now. The stock ArcadeVGA video drivers even load and recognize the card.

Saved me a good $100 I figure.

EDIT: f*ck I almost emailed that guy back when I was looking for one. Really glad I got side tracked on making one instead. What a PIECE OF SH*T to be out ripping people off.

Not sure what good the one I made will do, as its tailored to my exact card but if you PM me I'll hook you up with the AVGA bios for the Radeon 7XXX, 9XXX vid cards and the tools you'll need to do the job on your own vid card :)

If you don't plan on using Windows then its really easy, the hard part is getting the bios to a state that works with your card and that the AVGA windows drivers will recognize as an AVGA.
