I just picked up a Mortal Kombat 3 game, and want to upgrade it to the Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 specs. I know the only change between the two boards are some of the chips, but I have not been able to find the upgrade chips.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'd point you to ToplessZ, but I'm not entirely sure if he's got a MK3->UMK3 kit, he's got a retro kit for UMK3->MK3 lol

you can check out hobbyroms.com or hit ebay.

ideally you should hang onto your MK3 set brother, they're kinda rare now. some people (myself included) treat them like 2 separate games rather than an upgrade.

send user ToplessZ a PM real quick, cause he's about to go on hiatus from the hobby for a few months.

Here is where MAME is your friend.

Go to: http://maws.mameworld.info/maws

Check out the MK3 and UMK3 games and the ROM sets for them. Look to see what is different between the 2 games.

Now this is tricky in this case since the UMK3 ROM sets are labeled differently. However, even though they have different labels (MK3 vs. UMK3) many of the chips are identical. What you end up doing is comparing the checksums one by one to see which chips are different.

So what you end up with is a list of chips with different checksums that need to be replaced to make the change: U2, U54, U63, U121, U120, U119, U118, U117, U116, U115, and U114.

I can burn ROMs for you too. The chips and programming rates (3.99 for the first chip, 1.99 for each additional) are listed on my website. I have several tubes of new 8Mb EPROMs.
