I was wondering if anyone was interested in doing weekly high score contest threads here. They do them over at the arcade controls messageboards, but these boards are a lot more active than those are and thus could get a lot more people involved.

The high score in question should be achieved during the week of the competition, and not just be an old score. A picture of the score is required.

Generally how they do it is that the winner of the contest selects the title for the next contest. Real hardware, Mame and x in 1 should all be appropriate platforms. I would just suggest that current and former Twin Galaxies world record holders for the title in question not be eligible to win, just to keep it from being hopeless.

I was thinking we could start with Scramble, dip switches set to 3 lives.

Boardset would have to be the same. The fuel depletion speed is such a huge difference between the Stern and Konami PCBs that it becomes a totally different game.

Hmmm, then perhaps another title would be best or just have a winner for each type.

As I am betting most people with boards have Stern ones, and I am pretty sure the 60 in 1 uses the Konami romset.

Which one is the harder one?

I'll be interested when a title I own comes up for competition.

sounds fun!

Stern is much much tougher. With the Konami boardset as long as you hit a tank every once in awhile, even as high as 300k in score or whatever, you don't have to worry about fuel and it becomes an obstacle course only.

With the Stern boardset after 3 loops, you miss one tanker (for the most part there are like a couple of exceptions) literally and it's game over.

Ok, well since I am going to assume that the number of people using the 60 in 1 (which has the Konami set) and the number of people with mame is going to far outnumber the ones with Stern boardsets I say this is a go.

I will post a new thread for the contest itself.

I like the idea of a weekly contest; I think it should get it's own spot in the forum.

Speaking of which, I'd still love to see some Java games on here with imbedded forum scoring and high-score icons, like they have on some other forums. ;)

+1

I still like the contests at the arcade parties and repair parties. I like the feel and sound of the original games, complete with cigarette burns and gum. Without original hardware and program there is too much room for error and hacking. I know on Time Solders if you remove the two resistors on the chip right near d1, you will never die.

I still would like to see something where we could all play a specific game and let it run for a week or so and post (all) the scores. <<That would make it good for poking fun at some. It would give me something else to do other than post here while waiting on parts and pcb's.

Well, that is what we are doing. First contest is posted.

I am not worried about cheating, the only prize is selecting next week's game.

Which, I suggest we try to mostly stick to things on 60 in 1 and 19 in 1 until we exhaust those, since those titles will allow the largest numbers of people to participate.

I think it's an awesome idea. As mentioned, keep it to popular games that are contained on the mult boards or else are pretty common. I would just like to take this opportunity to point out that cliff clavin is currently the scramble high score king! C'mon people who is going to try and take done the master? Cliff clavin, the shogun of scramble!

Great idea! Looking forward to some friendly KLOV competition; I'll have to sit out Scramble this week as my cab is a four way joystick and one button - I plan on hooking up a second button, but not this week! :D
