To move games within their house?

I've hurt my hip, and I've got three machines to move from my garage to basement in the next two weeks. Asteroids, Centipede and Tron.

Just curious if the movers take it in stride, and are willing to do just an hour or two's work?

call some friends or family. I never heard of movers coming to move stuff within house? seems like the cost wouldnt be worth it

I'd say it depends on the locale. Moving stuff within one location is just as much a "handyman" purview as anything. Good luck...

It depends on your location. I just hired movers the other day to move a game upstairs for me, $50. I would recommend not using a corporate/franchise place as they have hourly minimums. The place I used was mom and pop, they came within the hour and were fantastic.

Around here we have companies like "Muscles for Hire" that do this sort of thing. They're listed sometimes as handymen, sometimes as movers .. so you might check both listings near you. I use them sometimes for moving pianos and organs up and down stairs.

Another alternative obviously is just paying some buddies or family to do it (depending on the company, beer is usually an acceptable currency).

Yeah, I've thought about just having friends over, but I'd feel like a heel not doing some of the lifting myself.

Maybe I should just double the amount of beer that I offer....

Some thoughts:
1) Mention to your friends that you are looking for some movers to move a couple of games. Chances are if they are real friends, they will do it for beer and pizza (and some game time).
2) If any of your neighbors have a kid on the HS football team ask if the kid wants to get a couple of buddies and make a few bucks.
3) Drive to your local Home Depot parking lot and yell "anybody want to make a few buck?". Make sure you speak Spanish or have a Spanish speaking friend along.

I have hired a local company that did in-house moves. They did the following:

1) moved 34" CRT HDTV from 1st to 2nd floor
2) moved 27" CRT TV from 2nd floor to basement
3) moved 720 cabinet from garage to basement
4) moved SWCP cabinet from garage to basement

Total cost: $100
Total time: 15 min (I kid you not)

2 guys who knew what they were doing.

I agree that it depends on location and that probably a smaller local company would be more reasonable to work with rather than a nationally known moving company. I usually have just bribed a few friends with beer, but the advantage I have besides a liquor license is that I think my friends would rather drink free beer and move my games than have to watch the Browns.

This works. If you can't find Spanish speaking blokes you can always get a whino.

I live in an area with a lot of homeless dudes and if you catch them at a sober time you can get the game moved for two 40's of Old English. The problem is they stink up your house and you may have to shoot them later for breaking in, so don't get too attached.

For me it came down to hassle, favors owed, and convenience. $50 done 5 minutes and they were there within 30 minutes = bonus. Not having to owe my beefy friends a favor = double bonus. Keeping all the beer to myself =priceless

That's hilarious.........

Hell no I wouldn't hire movers, why pay people to break your shit when you can do it yourself?

Well, I didn't technically hire movers.... however we purchased new furniture and when the delivery guys got here after they moved the new stuff in, I offered them some $$ to move my juke box down stairs. They were professional furniture movers and did a great job and on the cheap for cash. So if you need that new dining room table.....

personally, i'd ask another local klover to do it. i move all my games by myself, so i don't need the help, but i'd just as soon have someone local do it rather than someone i don't know that may or may not try and break in later.

Call your local fire station and see if they have some muscle that does stuff for cash. Ours does.

Well, I've already broken myself, so I want to skip breaking my stuff.

Normally I'd just try to get friends to help, but it would feel weird to have them haul stuff while I sat back and did nothing.

if you're hurt real friends won't care, may even get you a beer while they're helping themselves to your generous offerings

I'd gladly move games for my friends, even if they sat there and pointed - especially if they are injured. What are friends for?

This, exactly! I found a couple of H.S. kids that live in the neighborhood when they posted a flyer on our door saying they'd do yard work or any other thing you need. They were both football players for a private H.S. locally, and they're now freshman football players at the local college. They still live here and I've got their cell #'s, so anytime I need some extra muscle I call these guys. I give them some money and some playtime on the games and they're happy (and my back is happy too). I don't know what I'm going to do when they graduate college in a few years, get jobs, and move away...

Like YellowDog said, hire some day laborers. If you have friends that know about your injuries they shouldn't mind that you're not heloing out, I wouldn't.
