Anyone here ever replace a lock with a credit button?

I have a few cabs that cannot be set for free play and also do not have locks on the coin doors. I would like to fill the empty lock holes with momentary push buttons. Anyone else done this? If so what type of switches did you use? I cannot seem to find anything big enough to fill the lock holes.

NOTE: They DO require about 2 minutes of filing in a standard size hole to fit.

i use the same pushbuttons that i use for the rest of the controls. i have this on 2 of mine, plus external on/off buttons and a pause button on my neo-geo. how big is the hole?

How do you keep the door closed if you choose this approach?

Something I like better is to connect the coin switch wire to the 2player button. You can then add credits by pressing the 2nd player start button with no visible changes to the game.

This can be done by running a wire from the coin switch to the 2PL start switch or by adding a small wire jumper to the board or the connector harness.

I drilled 2 holes right under neath the coin slots and put in regular arcade pushbuttons and siliconed the slot so my daughter doesnt stick crap in it

They may be all 3/4'' not sure. I have a ton of control panel buttons both leaf and micro but I would have to enlarge the holes on the coin doors to fit them and I do not want to do that in case I decide to sell them and the next owner can still install locks if needed.

what do you twist the key to add credits? I don't want something like that lol

Yeah... you twist the key and get a credit... It sure looks more authentic than a button sitting in the coin door lock spot. But to each his/her own.

As for how i keep the door closed, I use industrial strength velcro. Sure, it won't work on location, but it works just fine for home use.

A regular leaf switch button works fine. Just put the button through the hole where the lock was, pull the leads of your coin mech and connect it to the leaf switch connectors inside the machine. Then when you push the button it adds a credit. As far as keeping the door closed if you loosen the top screw on the coin door a couple of turns it will cause it to push against the coin door frame and will stay closed. Most stay closed on their own anyway. I have this on all my machines except for Journey which has the factory credit switch.

My Crystal Castles and Xevious do not have freeplay so I did the button trick. Crystal castles does not have a 1 player button, basically hitting a jump button starts the game so I can't wire a credit that way. Unfortunately something about atari start buttons do not like the coin trick tied to 1st player either.

I used extra red large buttons from Radio shack and a little silicon to hold the button in place for Crystal Castles. It is down by the lock box. For Xevious, I used an existing hole some goomba operator left from putting a lock bar there. Hole was large enough for a large button. I did the Xevious about 6 months before I did the Crystal Castles, which is why I didn't do the key hole option. It was when I got desperate with the Crystal Castles that I didn't want to drill a new hole so I did the key hole. Coin door was already kind of sticky, so I didn't have to worry about it popping open. You can see both red buttons in the picture below.

At one point I used the slam switch on a neighbors machine. Just unhooked the slam switch, and connected the coin switch wiring to it. One quick slap and we have credits!

I modify IL coin mechs with a micro switch so the reject button turns into a hidden credit button. The switch position allows the mech to still operate normal (accept quarters).

Simple, cheap and hidden.
