Anyone Here Ever Convert a Trivia Whiz to Phraze Craze?

So I wound up just cleaning up my $50 Trivia Whiz (in really nice shape, just dirty) and leaving it as such; as tbbk said, it's one of the games that gets the most play. However, since the trivia is a little old, and my wife is very into word games, I figured I'd convert it to Phraze Craze. I found the instructions to do so online, but from what I can tell, it needs a "decoder chip" (which Merit calls a dec006). Shot in the dark, but is there a way around that (I'm guessing not), or does someone have one they can spare? Seems otherwise to be a RAM swap (6116 to 6264), a few jumpers, and burning a set of ROMS (which I have).

Actually. yes I do, including the marquee. The PCB might not work, but it would have the decoder chips and roms and such.

Go to the facebook link in my signature and search for "phraze"

Was a Taito conversion that got left in dampness for many years

Nice. I'll shoot you a PM. That cabinet looks like it's been through hell and back, but the PCB doesn't even look horrible. That PCB picture also answered another question I had so thanks for that too!

If it is a CRT100, then just burn some new chips.

There are multiple versions if you want to download a new set of either.

Thanks, rod. I have a CRT 200 though. I found the 11 ROMS for Phraze Craze, and think I even have a 6264 floating around somewhere. That decoder chip is the sticking point though.

So thanks to Rob, I now have a Phraze Craze board set. As he warned me, the PCB's did see moisture, but they actually weren't too bad. I did notice though that Phraze craze used 27c256 eeproms; some of them are ok and I just swapped them over to my original pcb. However I do have to replace some others. I have 27256 eeproms. Can I use those instead of 27c256's (which I do not have)?

Yep, shouldn't be a problem.

If you have a question about chip compatibility, you can always find the manufacturers data sheets online. Can compare the pinout and voltage requirements to make sure you aren't going to kill something.

Gotcha. I did that, but I noticed that the "c" in the chip name denoted it as a CMOS chip. I burned the replacement ROMS, but getting some scrambled graphics, so I was wondering if it had to do with using incorrect ROMS. I didn't think so, but wanted to be sure before I started chasing a false positive (or is that a false negative.....). ;)

Did you verify the code on the ones that you transferred?

Yup. I'm thinking it may just be a connection issue though since some of the transferred ones were a little crusty; I was being lazy. I'm going to just burn a new set like originally intended and see how that goes. Game comes up and plays, just can't see what you're doing, so I'm guessing it's U37 thru U40 or maybe even U5 (or a combination thereof). But now that I know I can use the eeproms I have, I'll have plenty. I have tons of 27256's on parts boards.

So just realized that part of my problem was using vertical ROMS on a horizontal setup. Duh. Went in and found the correct horizontal ROMS in MAME. Now I'm trying to find where the frig I put my bag of 27256's......

Ok looks like we're good to go. Finally had time to fiddle with my Trivia Whiz. It is now a Phraze Craze. Thank you again, Rob!
