I got a call today from a guy who needed some emergency repairs on a couple pacs. Turns out they were at a huge gaming convention in Alexandria, VA which is about 1.5 hours from me. So I load up my stuff and make the trip out. Im really expecting a small event with mostly pc and console gamers but it was much more than that. They had everything you can imagine and surprisingly even had roughly 40 arcade machines there. This convention occupied the entire Hilton hotel and it was a big building. I was amazed at the size of this gathering and thought I would share it here. Its a 4 day event and will be going on all day tomorrow and then half of Monday if any locals wanted to go.
I got his games back up and running for the rest of the convention and made a new customer. He rambled off a big list of stuff he needs fixed and I pointed out a few things on some of his games there.
Here's the website if you want to check it out.

never been

I used to live about 20 min from there.
My friend mikes always goes I thought it was in the fall other wise I might have planned on taking a trip to go this time.
They play games all night long at the hotel also!
P.s. I didn't receive a reply from ur pm, so I emailed you about my ms pac.
Thanks
Ttyl

Did they have anything for sale?

I've seen the website for the convention. It looked like it was half music/concerts and half console/computer gaming, with very little "classic" arcade stuff, but 40 games is more than I would have guessed.

I was thinking about going but they only sell tickets for the entire thing (at $40 each) instead of something more reasonable per day. Any idea if it would be cheaper if I showed up on Sunday?

ixtlann, the guys name was Mike so maybe the same guy? Did he look kinda like one half to cheech and chong?
Im not sure about pricing, he offered us free passes for helping out but I had to scoot. I played some games for about 30 minutes or so.
A good majority of the stuff there was consoles and pc stuff. I was surprised to see the amount of arcades there. He said he is always looking for more arcades if anyone wants to bring some next year.

Yep! Magfest is an awesome time. I know a good number of people who attend and work the event, and I've heard some very solid things about it. I keep meaning to go myself, but since it usually falls around crunch time for an event I help coordinate in RI, it's tough to make the trip. I have heard very glowing praise about it, though.

Speaking of which, I'd also recommend TempleCon in RI, for a slightly different yet equally as fun weekend in February. Plenty of games (video, arcade, and non), music, guests, and lots of good people.

Of course I'm extremely biased since I've been part of the organization team for 5 years, and spend about 3/4 of the year working on it at this point. :D

MAGfest is pretty cool I've been told. I got friends that go every year and the arcade scene really only started last year. A couple of guys on the neo forums truck their cabs up from NC for the fest to supply almost all the cabs. Prior to last year there would only be a couple of cabs and a load of consoles.

I've been told that if you bring a cab you get a free pass...I'm always working over New Years so I haven't been able to find out first hand yet...

I think your right about that. He will also arrange to pick them up for you if you cant get them there.

I wish I would have read this on friday. Damn that would have been pretty cool to go to.

Hum this would make a nice event date for a calender I know of.

I knew about it a week before but figured there would only be a couple arcades so didnt think much more about it. He called me up wanting to get a couple pacs fixed that craped out during the show so I reluctantly made the trip up to fix them.
It definitly looked like a worthwhile show to attend and can be even better as they are looking to add many more arcades to the show.
