Hey folks, I've been getting into After Burner a lot recently but that game kicks my butt real fast. Anyone got any good tips or tricks to suggest?
So far all I do is weave around on the screen trying to "paint" the incoming enemies with missile locks in succession before I fire my missiles and hope to get a lot of them. I really don't find the machine guns much use at all. And I don't manage the barrel roll very well, is it just pull left and right a lot?

I have it on MAME, Sega Genesis 32X and I even recently downloaded After Burner Climax on PSN, yet all three versions destroy me pretty quickly.

So you aren't playing the upright? That could be half your problem. You need analog controls.

The best advice I can give you is to be defensive. You can't shoot planes down if you're too busy tailspinning into a fiery mess on the ground below. Stay out of the smoke trails so you can see incoming missiles. Get into the rhythm of luring them out one way, then turning, pulling up or diving to avoid them during their final moments of homing in. Veering in any one direction for too long will not shake them, obviously - they're homing missiles after all - but the throttle can assist. Slam it into FAST to ignite the after burner for a quick getaway. This is also very much needed in later stages when missiles approach from behind. Also use this in conjunction with a fast slow-down to outmaneuver dogfighting planes from behind, then gun them down.

The guns are useful on the bomber planes, since they pose no immediate threat, as well as planes that come up alongside you on occasion. You can also shoot down some formations as they come close, but I'd advise downing as many of those with lockon missiles as possible. And lastly, when you get to the strafing runs (bonus points!), obviously go slow since nothing is shooting at you. Aim your nose towards the ground, but slightly up. You will be able to shoot away the ground targets and still have the ability to shoot down even lower to maximize damage to clusters of targets.

The rollover is easy once you get the hang of it. You just need to throw the controller left to right or right to left quickly.

For what it's worth, I can beat the "world record" of 5M consistently.

Ask my son. He amazed me by playing through the entire program on about the second try. He was about 12 at the time. I still don't know how he did it.
