So I brought home my latest freebie today....
LOTR!!!!

But.... it's been in a warehouse fire, so it got a little...cooked...

Playfield is great with the exception of one thin-ankled hobbit leaning a bit and some light surface rust on some of the wire ball ramps.

The backbox is toast (literally) though everything works.
powers on, PF lights work, dmd works, etc...
when I enter self test it keeps scrolling right so I'm guessing a shorted switch/wire/ic somewhere so that's where the testing ends till I clean things up and decide what to do.

I'm not quite sure what I'll do with this thing but hell, it's a desirable pin that mostly works? Much cleaning in my future I guess :)

Wow, it is pretty impressive that it still works as well as it does. You could part it out for a ton of money or you can wait on someone else to part one out so you cn get a backbox. Sounds like a situation I'd be willing to be forced into...

Wow, I can't believe it works. That's a trip.

Ya know, if was a Freddy, it would be like some sort of "Special Edition". ;)

that would be a good testomonial to send to stern!!!

also dude!! i know where thgere is a NOS cabinet and headbox!!!! yes, NOS i laid eyes on it the last time i was over there...

Ill give ya $100 for that lotr as is!!!!!!!! LMK DUDE!!! i always hoped to find one of these newer sterns with fixable damage... this ones hurtin but worth the effort imho..

How did you get it for free man? score any other crispy games?

EDIT seems troy has already put a offer in as well.. he gets first picks, if you two dont work a deal lmk id like to be lowman on the totum pole if possible.

Yeah, I'm getting the cabinet from Troy, saw his listing just after I posted this.

I figure it will be about another 300-400 in parts to get it back to playing properly once I have the cabinet.

Should make for a good winter project!

Great stuff. Good to hear that you're getting that cabinet that's been hanging around on eBay for so long.

I've had my LOTR for only about 2 months now, but man, I really love it. Just last night I kept playing games back to back and had to force myself away from the machine. It's a game where you have to know where to shoot and make your shots. You can have long games where you score small because you're not following flow and then you can have relatively shorter games where you score big.

I doubt I'll ever send this pin down the line. I love it.

Hey what is these two pins--- TSPP, OXO, --- that you have in your line up? Hows the Data East Simpsons pin? I heard that sega, and Data east were made for the mechanically incline as you have to maintenance them almost every 3-4 plays, doubt if it's true but have heard horror stories about them 2 companies. Midway, Atari, and Capcom how are there machines as far as reliabilty goes. Thats what I'am after is reliability a machine built for abuse and the long haul. I do like the titles of the Sega, DE, Atari, Capcom, and Midway.

TSPP is The Simpsons Pinball Party by Stern. OXO is an EM game by Williams with a tic-tac-toe theme.

I really like the Data East Simpsons, and I've never had problems with it except for when a drop target broke, but that can happen on any machine. I've actually had no issues with Data East machines, but I don't own any Sega machines so I can't comment there.

Data East gets a bad rep from snobbish collectors that only like Bally/Williams games. Truth is, Data East games hold up just as well mechanically and many of them are just as fun. I'm actually giving the DE Simpsons game to my brother as he's moving into a new home next week and we gotta get his game room started right!

The big bonus you get from owning Williams or Bally games is that there are a lot of parts still available for them. Because they were pretty much the industry standard over the years, tons of parts will always be easy to come by. Personally, I'd never worry about owning a Data East game though. I have two of them, and they're both great.

I was thinking about buying a Data East Simpsons. What's the value of one in good cosmetic condition and fully working (non-shopped)?

Damn what a good brother you are, that's awesome. Thanks for the response also.

As my pin experience grows, I realize more and more that DE/SEGA gets a bad wrap for not much of a reason. Honestly, I think it has most to do with snobby collectors trying to protect their investment. Hey, if they can keep the illusion going that Williams did no wrong, and that any Williams game is automatically worth 50% more than any other manufacturer, then they protect their pin values.

While there is a handful of excellent Williams games, every manufacturer has a handful of great games. Williams handful is bigger I would say though.

I love DE machines and those are actually what i started my pin addiction with...

current collection:

DE last action hero
DE tales from the crypt
DE rocky & bullwinkle
DE jurassic park (just sold actually)
SEGA frankenstein
DE simpsons (just sold)
DE Back to the future (works great, just working out weird speech/music issue)

then onto my other pins.

BALLY - dr. dude
WILLIAMS - johnny mnemonic
STERN - T3
STERN - Roller coaster tycoon

ALL in ALL i just kind of find myself being a "title" whore which generally leads me to the DE/SEGA side of the spectrum...
