Anyone feel like the Wii U is doomed?

They will have to keep some games cartoony. Imaging playing a HD version of this guy:

Nintendo is in big trouble. They already lost about 1 billion in the first six months of their fiscal year and a turnaround is nowhere in sight. I don't think this company has ever posted an operating loss for a complete fiscal year.

Nintendo faces stiff competition from easily downloadable smartphone and tablet computer games and social networking websites. They seriously underestimated the marketplace. If I was them, I would dump the handheld systems now. In today's marketplace people don't want proprietary hand held systems, they want everything in one place - their phone. Increasing market share in content on this platform is critical.

I would continue with a new Wii system but I would make it the most technologically advanced system in the marketplace, not just a weak upgrade of the existing system.

I definately agree about dumping the handheld systems but Nintendo's POV is anyone under 13 years old dont have smartphones so therefor they need to keep their handhelds.

Maybe they need to market the handhelds like printers. Sell at a loss but to make it up in software/accessories. Yea i know they are easy to hack but what percentage of population actually use those cards, 5-10%?

I'm really hoping Nintendo (and more likely Sony) embraces handhelds as a more open platform, they could release the core hardware (DS, PSP, whatever), then license it to smartphone makers to do their own versions (integrated into phones) with software that would be cross compatible with any approved device. When users that started on the core hardware eventually graduate to an integrated smartphone they could still transfer their game library and add to it

I really don't see how the Wii U will be a huge success, but I felt the same about the Wii. There doesn't seem as much enthusiasm from the hardcore Nintendo crowd for the U that was there for the original Wii though, and pretty much every game maker has gimmicks to distract buyers now

my take on the whole console thing now is companies need to look to make consoles portable period, with a option to hook it up to a display of some sort, that i feel is the natural evolution of console gaming, nintendo has always been the family friendly game company and i think alot of older gamers forget about that, when you were a kid were you playing halo? or SMB? now that games have become mainstream more people are involved there is a older audience involved now. even way back when during the atari age games were nothing more than a gimmick, atari brought it to the forefront, arcades were still the "" loser hangout, now even girls are digging on games, something much unheard of in the early to mid 80's....just food for thought.........

I think Nintendo said last week that the Wii U is getting a total redesign and next E3 they're going to pretend like last years presentation never happened, lol.

I hate the idea as phones as mobile gaming devices when it comes to anything that requires a gamepad. Virtual gamepads suck. I have games on my iPhone but I only play the ones that use the accelerometers or the tilt sensors or were designed for touch controls. Unfortunately those controls only lend themselves well to a certain type of game.

The Playstation phone was a great idea but its lack of software will be the death of it.

If Nintendo made a phone I would buy it as long as it has dedicated controls. I know they won't though.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens, because you are right - trying to emulate other control schemes using a touch screen just blows. Games written for the platform rock, ports often just don't work out. The truth is that people are buying the smartphones anyway, but once they have the smartphone very few want to shell out for a dedicated mobile gaming device.

I'm thinking that there's a market for 'control cases' (a case that you dock your phone into, which provides real controls). That's a big pain in the ass, given the number of phone models and the frequency of change, but you might get me to buy such a thing, while I don't think I'll ever buy another dedicated mobile gaming device.

We might be better off on the gaming phone front if someone had smacked a Nokia engineer on the back of the head when he proposed side-talkin'. But that's history now...

I really don't see why they can't just make a slide-out directinal pad and buttons just like we have slide-out number pads and keyboards now. It would keep the form factor small and as long as it isn't made out of the cheapest plastic, woud work fine.

I'm not sure it would hold up well, but I'd sure like to see it in a product to find out.

Well, we have some teens here that use a slide-out mini keyboard to text constantly, and they speed type with their thumbs about as fast as the average gamer, so I think it would hold up okay... as you say though, I would sure like to help "stress test" it ;)

Well that's pretty much the playstation phone I guess

But I have to say I'd still buy a dedicated handheld, I'll most likely get the Psp vita

I'm sure smartphone games sell pretty well, but that doesn't mean they'll dominate the market, it's just another avenue for developers to make money off of.. hell Minesweeper is probably the most popular game of all time, much more than the bestselling smartphone game, and it still can't get any respect.

I was actually thinking about getting the PS Phone; I don't really like the design of the Vita, the touch sensitive thing seems like it would be more of a gimmick and a hinderance than something fun and useful.

However after reading the comments about the lack of games, I'm not so sure about making the purchase anymore.
Right now I'll probably stick with my 5 year old Nokia 6103.. It still gets fantastic battery life, and I have Galaga, Tetris, Othello and Chessmaster on it . ;)

Nintendo's ace in the hole is that their consoles/handhelds have an exclusive development deal with the largest (or sometimes second largest) game publisher.

Apparently the 3DS is doing better than I knew - according to this:

http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/12/3ds-to-beat-out-original-ds-first-year-sales-land-killing-blow/

the 3DS is poised to beat the DS's first year numbers, assuming a good holiday season. So perhaps the handheld space isn't as bad off as I thought it was...

I never really understood why people were saying the 3DS wasn't doing well to begin with. I mean yes, the software lineup wasn't great, but we knew it would pickup.

I think the thing that hurt it, were stories of people getting headaches from the 3D effect. I still haven't tried it yet so I can't comment.

I am intruiged by the 3DS but I can't give up my modded DS Lite, it's a game machine and PDA, and wi-fi scanner all in one for me. :)
