Anyone ever think of quitting the hobby for another?

This has been the cheapest hobby I have ever had. I average about $1000 per year, which is actually pretty cheap. RC goes beyond that really quick. I started getting out of that hobby when I realized that I was spending more on shocks for my RC car than I was on my 4x4. I do get back into RC every few years though. I drop about a grand, use it a couple of times, then it sits.

IF it weren't for the space issue, I think this hobby would be perfect.

I'll concur this hobby can be cheap, until you start modifying your house for it. ;)

I also have other hobbies that I haven't given up, and don't see the need to sell off games to pursue something else. The gameroom is a great Winter hobby, as there is always something to do inside. Pretty much everything else I enjoy involves being outdoors.

How much would you really get for your games in a down market? Sometimes it's not that easy to sell them for what you're hoping to get. If there was a raging market right now, it might be nice to turn a profit. The good news is that you're not losing money to hang onto them.

The only time that I really reconsidered the home arcade thing was a couple months ago when I decided it was time to rearrange furniture and make room for a dining room table. It kind of sucks to stand back and realize that you'd have plenty of room for [insert furniture here] if it weren't for that friggin' game in the corner. Luckily for me, I was able to work it out.

Or

Competitive nitro RC car racing :D

Wooooooooooo nitro!! Man I miss that. Have'nt raced them in years,it's all about the brushless and lipo now. I used to race a XXXNT,RC10GT and a Kyosho Burns waaaaaaaaay BITD when nitro was the fastest thing on the track. I did onroad for awhile too running the old Serpent cars and then 1/5 scale HARM's. I now run CORR trucks and have been since 08. Again, another hobby that will start again this year. All my outdoor hobbies are starting all over again and then back to the basement I go to get back into games in November.

Well,I guess it can be cheap for the shrewd buyer or someone who's super quick on the draw (and lucky) on those occasional great CL deals.
I've been really fortunate with a lot of the games I've bought. A good example is my Tempest that I bought non-working for $50. The most I've spent at one time for any machine was $500 for my MK II and that was because it's one of my "grail" machines.

I don't see myself ever fully getting out of this hobby. Right now I'm out of space and I do miss the thrill of getting a new game to work on. I took a break for most of January and February and didn't really play much or work on anything. I spent a lot of time during that period playing Call of Duty on my PS3 and it was a nice break. I've been a bit more active again lately and I'm still searching for a Street Fighter 2 for the collection. I may very well have to get rid of a game or two, but such is the reality of limited space.

I agree 100% with the cost of racing R/C but if you are into it for bashing, money wise it's reasonable as long as you don't go overboard on useless mods like aluminum crap. I ran onroad indoor and outdoor for six years and on average I was spending $200-300 a month on tires, batts, wheels etc. That does'nt even include the cost of gas, hotel rooms etc. I had a few sponsors and even that barely helped keep the cost down. Eventually the cost got to be to much and I gave up on it to go offroad. It costs a good amount to be competitive in onroad because you almost have to have the best of everything to get the advantage over others along with driving skill. I now race CORR class which is a strict class with limitations on batts, motors, and battery size. It is extremely cost effective and on average I spend $40 and that's on tires. Nothing else has to be spent on them unless you break or something even then it's like $5+ to replace a part. Everyone in the class is even and it leads to pure neck and neck phone the entire race with no one having a huge advantage unless you are a highly skilled driver, even then the classes are divided by skill level also. I highly recommend CORR to anyone. Endless fun with near bulletproof vehicles.

If I marry a hot chick, then I'll consider leaving the hobby and my new hobby would be making babies! But you gotta at least keep a few games around to play once in a while.

I have gotten my exact asking price and made double or more profit for 9 out of 11 games I have sold since January. Lucky I guess?

Bastard! I'd still like to see pics of it if you have any.. :p

I wish I had taken some. I kick myself in the butt all the time for not doing so because it was the second game I ever bought. It was in a data east cab with the curved top for curved marquees.

I guess everyone got the wrong idea of my original post. I never mentioned getting out completely because I know I'll be back. I just wanted to maybe liquidate a little or merely scale down on the operation. Of course I'll keep my grails but the rest can go to someone else. I have just litterally gotten exhausted from constant searching, picking up games almost every week, always restoring something. I just want to do something else for a little while but I keep seeing things I want because the prices are so insane. DAMN!!! WHy does this hobby have such a drug like effect on meeeeeeeeeeeee!!????? I need an intervention

My take on it is this..... I think you have to have multiple hobbies or else you wind up burning yourself on that particular one. Which sounds like your case. Me personally, sounds like you need to take a time out. Not that doesn't necessarily mean getting rid of them, unless it's for financial reasons, just means keep in the back corner. I agree what someone said on here, that some of these titles are getting harder and harder to find. An example of this for me is Front Line - a childhood favorite! Occasionally you do see one here and there, but the bezel and backglass on this one is absolutely mint!

As far as other hobbies go, I do find this one to be the cheaper ones. Pinball machines can be an exception. The problem w/ this one, it is a "space killer"! I was into model railroading and collecting various guitars. By far, more expensive! Still collect *vintage* Star Wars items. And some of that is even creeping up price-wise.....

I was very, very hardcore into RC racing starting in 1998. Ran electric racing, both on and off-road three to four times a week. Loved it. Probably ran my XXCRKE, and my Street Weapon/TC3 the most. Then the track I used to love going to shut down, I moved where there were NO electric on-road tracks, things switched to 2.4ghz, lipos, and then brushless, and it just got harder to get back in. I LIKED cutting commutators. I've attempted a couple of comebacks, so I do have some of the right gear now, and I have been feeling the pull of getting back into it. It's just going to take a lot of time and money to get back to it.

But nothing beats getting in a rhythm and nailing the lines around every corner, landing the perfect line coming off the straight, sticking a sweet pass after chasing a guy most of the race.... And that rare moment of feeling 9 other cars trying to chase you down. It's sweet, frenetic chaos. Ahhhhh, man. I sure miss it.

ive been in and out of hobbies but never really detoured from any. Trust me if there is someone out there that says you can have more than one hobby it is me. I started collecting Home console stuff and dvds. got down to owning every NES game (yes stadium events, bubble bath babes, hot slots, etc.) aside from 3. And then sold off my rares because it just bugged me to be sitting on 5K worth of games that could be chewed up by my dog, or lost in fire, etc. So i sold off the rares. i used to collect them complete (with box and manual) then decided to go cart only. (sold off all the boxes and manuals). Then decided to collect only Licensed nintendo games. (sold off all my unliscensed ones.) Got into collecting vinyl, got a lot of rares. Then sold them off a few years later. Got into arcades. Had like 13. Sold off more than half of em. Got back into arcades picked up a few more. Downsized my home console collection some more. Sold off hundreds of DVDs i was never gonna watch. Basically the point here is that it happens to all of us. It goes in cycles of interest. And to me sums up a little thing called Life.

also keep in mind i had all the above going on while i had other hobbies to which included:

Playing in a band that would play out
playing drums
play guitar
play bass
paintball
fish
skateboard
working on arcades
collecting video games
running an ebay store

now my biggest hobby. My wife and our first baby. So everything else takes a back seat while i enjoy the new hobby. IMO you only get one life so do as much as ya can and just live man.

BTW Devin im sending you a pm about possibly buying some arcades if you do decide to sell. Im local and have no idea what games you even have. please pm me back this time ;-)

I sold all my arcade games (a dozen or two cabs, dozens of boards) & a good thousand or so home console games, plus their systems, in the mid/late 90s to fund my fighting robots: www.infernolab.com.

I then later sold all of my robot stuff & am now back into games.

The circle of life continues...

You can have more than one hobby, you don't have to quit one to do another.
I mean if I watch a lot of t.v. and decide I'm gonna do more reading I'm not gonna sell my t.v.

A recroom MUST have games or else it's just a basement

i am also a car guy, sold my first classic car 10 years ago and now i just sold off most of my collection(32) and now i am back into cars,i still have 12 games (4 for sale) i am keeping and that is it, so at that amount i still collect arcade games ,cars, old tractors,Ertl banks, all on a smaller scale and more manageable.
