Anyone ever think of quitting the hobby for another?

Have though about it a few times. But even if I did get out there woul dbe one or 2 games I would keep. Sometimes I think if I gave up the games I could fit more turtles in the garage. But Once I get the garage cleaned up more where I can set up a test bench and work on somethings I will enjoy it more.

I too have a project car. I typically work on it during the winter months as I can't paint cabinets, etc in the winter, but the cold doesn't affect me turning a wrench. I play video games in the winter and fix them in the summer. I drive my car in the summer and fix it in the winter.

i have other hobbies, but i haven't thought of quitting. another hobby is shooting/hunting, and if i want to buy a new gun or whatever, i just switch over to the hobby at hand.

And that's exactly what I am into. I was a big time Honda nut from 1992 up until 08' My last one out of the seven I owned got stolen back in 08 and thats when I decided to stop and get back into games. They are just to much of a theft risk these days and I also got tired of every flat brim hat wearing kid trying to race me just because they saw my FMIC. I work daily with DSM's so I didn't want to get into them because of that along with their reliability issues so i decided to try Subaru's. I picked up a WRX and love it. I pick up new motor to start my build next week and can't wait. 500 horsies here I come!!

I'm a DSMer and have set that hobby aside for arcade games. I burnt out on cars about 2 years ago mainly because friends/family always wanted me to fix their cars. Even though I love helping them out, it left no time for DSMs. I still have a ton of DSM parts/projects that I will get back into it eventually when I slow down with arcade games. I imagine I will go back and forth between cars and games a few times. I can't picture myself completely dropping either of the hobbies.

Also, what are these DSM reliability issues you speak of? :)

Hahahah I am speaking of the older 2g and 1g eclipse's,and Talons. Have you heard of DSM link engine management or ECM tuning? I work for ECM tuning and am the in house builder of all the accesories we sell. Almost every customer that comes in to us never drive their vehicle due to reliability issues that those cars have.If they do they are not highly modified. Most of our customers trailer their cars to our track events also for that reason but these guys are pushing upwards of 600+ WHP. Even my boss will tell you, they are not junk cars just unreliable at times and he owns two Talons and an EVO so he would know. Don't get me wrong though, these cars will last forever if built right and taken care of but most of them are already ragged out or in the scrapyard. I'm glad that our customers are devoted followers of the make so at least some of them will survive outside the hands of stupid kids.

Now that makes perfect sense. In the sense of modifying DSMs seem to get beaten on the most. I've had 8-10 DSMs over the years with no major issues at all. Had my Evo for 5 years now with no issues.

I'd say keep the games that you think you will regret selling down the line and sell the rest. No need to get completely out unless you are trying to build up a lot of cash for a new hobby, which BTW with 4 kids I can definitely understand :)

I've only been into arcade games for 7 months , and I plan to stay into the hobby as long as I can
I'm young, but then I'll have more time for it.

I collected 1/64 scale trucks a long time before getting into this hobby. I even continued to do both for a while. I still have a lot of trucks, but sold off a lot as well. Every once in a while I'll get my trucks out and display them. Then I put them away. Just enough to get me through "that stage". On another note.. I'd love to see your Sly Spy!! :D

I went the other way; I used to build race cars (late model stock cars & drag cars (including one for a young man named Rusty Wallace) and owned a '55 Chevy Pro Mod. But racing just became too expensive and time consuming. Also, I couldn't find quality help. I went back to the tech school where I taught to see if there was a kid who lives & breathes racing who would want to learn as he works. First question I got from these kids was "how much does it pay, what are the hours, and what does the benefits package look like?" Seriously. Then there was the physical toll working on race cars was taking on my knees.

So I sold the '55 a month ago and went back to my original, pre-16 year old hobby of electronics. Easier on the knees for sure and I don't need some snot-nosed teenage kid to help who's going to request two weeks off to try to land a drunk girl in Destin, FL over spring break. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Sorry if any of this post is politically incorrect.

I have heard of ECM tuning. When I stepped away from DSMs I was starting to look at engine management as my next mod. I had only done eprom cpu mods before and was looking to start really tuning. When I get back to it, you'll be there first person I contact! I will have all sorts of questions..like what kind of employee discount do you get :)?

There's no law in having another hobby AND this, but it's hard to have some hobbies when your other hobby takes all the available "hobby" space. I've considered emptying my garage of every project cab (except may a couple) and then picking up a old Italian car and sticking it in the garage to mess with...

Pro-Woodsball

Or

Competitive nitro RC car racing :D

For me I do have other hobbies other then my arcade collecting obsession but I don't think I can completely quit it for something else?Reason? It took me many years just to find certain games that just don't pop up everyday in my area and even if I decide to sell my games I know one day I whould regret it anyways, so I try and fit my other hobbies with this one. BTW this hobby is too much fun to enjoy with friends and family at least my family doesn't have to worry about me getting killed in a race car or street race which used to be one of my other hobbies.

I like this hobby because it's cheap, fun, diverse, and you can actually share it with other people.

Here is my take on some other hobbies I have experienced.

Building fast cars is super expensive, and more or less a solitary thing. You build something fast and then you cant have any (legal) fun with it on the street. So then it's track days for you, which are limited and totally expensive as well.

You could also make a pretty car, then you waste your time sitting at a show answering idiotic questions all day long.

Wheeling is fun, but that's just breaking parts and being stuck/stranded all the time, and RC cars are pretty much the same thing, just not as fun.

Sand quads, dirt bikes and the like are plenty fast, also fun, can look cool, but are dangerous as hell. There is plenty of opportunity to break crap here as well. Not to mention the expense of the support vehicles needed.

Dont get me started on boats.:stop:

Phet shared a second collection near and dear to his heart. I was a little unsure about it at first, I believe this is what it was.

Then again, I thought it was HUMMEL that he said.

There's no need to quit; just take breaks. I've quit like 5 times, then 6 months later I'm back into it.

I've been on break since May of 2010. Well, kind of.. Only.. *Cough* 3games *Cough*

Got to wait for the "gameroom" to be finished, or what ever that means. :cool2:

Ummm...really?! Who are you buying from me wonders because cheap is definitely not a word I would use to describe this hobby.

Although I'm a lightweight in this hobby,I don't plan on getting out of it.
I have curtailed my spending in this hobby though, especially since I may have to quit my job this summer if I get accepted into the dental hygiene program.

This has been the cheapest hobby I have ever had. I average about $1000 per year, which is actually pretty cheap. RC goes beyond that really quick. I started getting out of that hobby when I realized that I was spending more on shocks for my RC car than I was on my 4x4. I do get back into RC every few years though. I drop about a grand, use it a couple of times, then it sits.

IF it weren't for the space issue, I think this hobby would be perfect.
