Anyone ever think of quitting the hobby for another?

So I am a huge motor head/car guy. Speed and horsepower has run through my veins for almost 30 years as I grew up in a family full of racers. Up until 2007 I was a participant in many radio controlled racing, IHRA drag racing events and SCCA autocross events up and down the east coast then I pushed all three to the side to focus more on collecting games as there was no way I could fund four hobbies all at once. Now I am to the point where I am wanting to drop arcade games and get back into my first three hobbies. I am also having many thoughts of selling most or all of my games, but of course you know I will be back. They always come back. Anyone else ever had thoughts of getting out to get into something else? If so what was/is it??

I really haven't even thought about it. In fact I'm hoping a couple things happen in my life so I can get more into the hobby as in having the time to do the exterior restorations of my machines. I actually was a big Harley guy before I got into this hobby, but it's amazing how that changed once I was run over by a student driver.

I gave up my British sports car (1980 MGB), which I'd had for almost 10 years, to get into Jeeps. Guess that's just a lateral.

Frankly, I enjoy playing the games. If I had only a basement full of projects, I'd be miserable. My max number of cabinets is probably going to be 3, plus the MAME rig.

I quit slot cars and got into pins. Prior to slot cars I used the space to work on my Ford Mustang.

Not yet. This has been an 8 year hobby for me so far, and I am still enjoying it. As long as I change out some of the games once in a while, I stay interested. I lost interest in cars and four wheeling about 10 years ago, and sold all of my RC stuff a few years ago. I am still interested in RC, but now it is more as a base for robotics. Arcade games are definitely my longest running interest. Even before collecting them, I have been a die hard fan since pong.I was born in '71, so I have been seeing and playing games for as long as I can remember.

I think the key to staying interested in this hobby is to keep experiencing new things. I thought I was done playing Pacman, so I never considered buying one. There was a too cheap to pass up cocktail recently, so I bought it. Talk about nostalgia! Hearing that game fire up was a lot of fun.

The biggest problem with hobbies is that they get too serious. They become an unpaid job after a while if you let them. I don't think you even have to get out, just go back into RC and cars for a while. If you have the space, keep the games so they will be there when you want them.

And that's exactly what I am into. I was a big time Honda nut from 1992 up until 08' My last one out of the seven I owned got stolen back in 08 and thats when I decided to stop and get back into games. They are just to much of a theft risk these days and I also got tired of every flat brim hat wearing kid trying to race me just because they saw my FMIC. I work daily with DSM's so I didn't want to get into them because of that along with their reliability issues so i decided to try Subaru's. I picked up a WRX and love it. I pick up new motor to start my build next week and can't wait. 500 horsies here I come!!

I dropped video games for 5 or 6 years after our kids were born. Once they got old enough to think these old games were cool I got back in it and this time I had a couple helpers. :) (which made the hobby 100x more fun btw)

I also drop off the face of the earth here from ~October thru ~January to focus on another hobby.

BTW, you are 100% correct when you say you'll be back. :D

I just bought out a guy who left the hobby to rebuild old BMX bikes in his garage. Seemed like an odd hobby to me, but to each their own. At least he gave me a decent deal on the package and I walked away with nice dedicated Toobin and Crystal Castles machines.

Space definately isn't the issue. I actually have room for at least 30 more games but I laid the basement out to purposely not leave space for more games lol. It would require allot of work to make the space available for games so it's a good thing I am to lazy to do so lol. The thing about keeping the games is,if I sell them off I can finish my motor build way ahead of schedule for race season. If I don't I'll have to work more OT in turn wearing myself out physically. I know that ultimately in the end I will regret selling them. What to do,what to do.

I bought a 2007 350Z last fall. With traveling for work and winter I have barely put a few hundred miles on it.

My big debate right now is buying a pin or two, or adding performance and stereo mods to the Z. HALP!

Why do you have to "get out" to go race for a while? Just close the door to the gameroom, and do something else for a bit. Then when you want to unwind after a long day of $newhobby, you grab a Pepsi and play some DK. Or 1943. Or Galaxian. Or Sly Spy.

No law against having games and something else.

Sweet!! Old BMX bikes have been making a big come back for the last 5 years. They are worth big money these days and who ever knew they would be? Definately not me. I had a few of those back in the day when racing them was big. GT performer's,Diamondbacks,Haro. They were all phenominal bikes in their day. I think i may be to tall for one these days but if I found one for the right price i'd take it to cruise the neighbor to to do bunny hops, endo's and the like. I may kill myself in the process but it's all in fun.

Arcade games and other indoor hobbies are great in the cold months but I also a car guy and I need something cool to wrench on in the spring and summer. I mean building a full all out race car is one thing but considering some of the arcade restorations I've seen on here you guys would be selling your self short if you didn't think you could build a cool vintage car to cruise in.

Feel the same sometimes. Too many hobbies, not enough time/money :/ BMW and Mercedes fan here (motorcycles too). Love also to write, surfing/beach, and play/watch tons of sports. Sometimes 24 hours is just not enough...well at least not when you have a 9-5. I don't know how guys with wives and/or children have time to do any of this.

FYI, if you do decide to sell any...let me know. Down in NoVA.

Cheers.

I don't know how I do it either with a wife and four kids ages,2,8,11,and 10. I get asked that all the time. On top of that every one of them except the 2 yr old is in a sport or activity of some sort so I have had to log allot of late night game related hours clear up to 4 am some days to get anything finished on a machine.

I don't plan on getting out of the hobby but I'm just about full up with all the games I hoped for and plan on enjoying them more. But I have a 1970 VW Beetle that I've had since my early 20's that has been in a fellow's shed for the past 10 years collecting dust ... and collecting my rent money. This spring/summer, I hope to drag it down to mom's empty garage and chip away at it. It needs a LOT of work.

Fun car to drive around and watch kids punch each other everywhere you go. "Punch-buggy, no punch backs!" But, then again, that was over 15 years ago. :(

Bingo. I never understand this 'all or nothing' mentality. I see it more and more with guys who are in the hobby for less than 2 years or so, sometimes less than 1. It seems they go ballz to the wall the first year, then the regret and fallout begins and they try to do everything in their power to 'get out' of the hobby. Either you like arcade games or you don't. No offense to the OP, but really, why do you have to 'get out'? Just cool off on the hobby for a while. 'Coast' if you will. Turn off your RSS feeds, quit buying 'cheap' projects and just enjoy your games in your leisure time. You're not the first person to ponder this question, but I really hope you're the last.

I think I won't be getting into another hobby. Unless I can find something that can comprise of so many other hobbies and still be interesting. You got metal working, Wood working, Various electronics skills from troubleshooting to soldering also have TV repair and if you wanted to Vectorizing and restoring Art. Oh plus there can be various level of painting skills involved in this hobby as well.

Plus I do have two project cars and every time I think about repairing them the gas always shoots up to $4 a gallon. If I'm going to spend ass loads of money I would rather have something material to show for it instead of exhaust vapor. I think it's about the same satisfaction I get after I buy fireworks and blow them up and realize I have nothing left but paper shards.
