So I got one of these last week and cannot pass the first stage to save my life. I set the DIP's to the easiest setting possible and bluto is still owning my ass. Is this game as difficult as I am making it out to be? I am seriously contemplating selling it because of this but I also like the fact that I finally have a nintendo row starting. I also love the artwork and the colors on it.

It's kind of hard, maybe you just need some pointers? I can pass the first level easily...maybe watch some videos of people playing it to get some tips?? Not a big fan of the game myself though...

Wow first stage????

Keep practicing...I find the game to be easy. Just wish there was more levels

The tougher games have more staying power. Hold onto it until you get better at it. I can't pass the 3rd stage yet, but I have a good time trying. Popeye has great artwork, but the most annoying attract mode music evar.

I usually grab as many hearts as possible while staying on the top level (where Bluto can't go), and jump down when I have to, grab hearts, then head back to the top.

In the next level you have to utilize the springboard.

I don't have that much of a strategy for the 3rd level but if you translate your skills from level one and two you can get past it.

In general, I do a lot of avoiding. Grab the notes/etc as close to the top as you can.

LOL I couldnt get past the first level no matter what I did. I played on a cocktail table and made it to the third stage, I was shocked

when you guys are saying "stage" or "level" you mean the very first screen right?

No, you need to practice bud. This game is somewhat easy, and does not have very good replay value. (not enough different screens)

With that being said, the sounds coming from a popeye machine should be present in every arcade.

Popeye can be hard. Hang in there though. You should see the 4th board when the first board repeats itself. Now THAT can be hard. I'd give it some time before I got rid of it.

I think Popeye is a good challenge. I can usually fall apart somewhere around the second ship level. It's a good game for sure. But, I don't play it all that often. :(

I usually make it to the 3rd and last screen, and sometimes roll it over back to the 1st screen. If you get back to the 1st screen again, that sea hag comes out and throws bouncing skulls that are impossible to punch. I usually don't make it any farther.

Nah - it's not too difficult at all.

You just have to get used to the thought of not being able to jump. Like any other game - practice.

Way easy when you compare it to something like Donkey Kong.

The Hearts/Notes/Letters come down the same way every time. Just a matter of figuring out where to be and when, and then remembering.

Haha..im not great at DK, my high is like 85K, but im better at DK than Popeye, although when I was growing up I had Popeye for NES and I remember making it atleast 6 levels deep...now I have the same problem trying to get past the 1st screen....

IMHO, I think your over thinking it. Just get the hearts and move on.. Don't go for points or fancy moves. I own the game and think it is fun, and after the boards repeat itself it gets very difficult. Best of luck to you!

alright,so I have been playing some more and can now get to the stage where wimpy is on the seesaw thing but can't get past that. Is this the last stage in the game?

Uh, no. That is stage 2 of 3.

I've only played it a couple of times and couldn't really get into it. I don't know if I passed the first screen or not as its been years but probably not. I think I remember seeing the Sea Hag. Is that from this game or something to do with the pinball machine?
